The first pitch in the 2005 season for the Golden Horseshoe Fastball League
will be thrown tonight as the Waterdown Hammer take on the Waterdown
Coyotes at Memorial Park in Waterdown.
The GHFL has expanded to 14 teams year, adding new teams in Niagara Falls
and Waterdown.
With the addition of Chris Shewfelt, the Hamilton Hawks will be looking to
defend their GHFL Playoff title in 2005 while ISC II ranked teams (#28)
Niagara Snappers and (#30) Mississauga Arrows will be hard on their heels.
Niagara Falls Fury, with hard-throwing Scott Wagar, and perennial
contenders St. Catharines Red Hot Chili Pepper, will be in contention, too.
The GHFL's Waterdown Hammer are travelling to Ohio for an early-season
test. Last year, the Hammer defeated both the eventual ASA "A" and ASA "B"
champions at the Elkland, PA tournament.
Up & coming team Waterdown Coyotes won two tournaments last year and will
be looking to build on their success in 2005.
The GHFL will be split in two divisions of seven this year. Each team will
play a home & home schedule within their division with a single game
against the other division's teams for a 19-game schedule.
Tournaments run by GHFL affiliates include the highly touted Niagara
Snapper Shootout June 3-5, featuring 8 of the top 30 teams from the ISC II
Preseason Rankings; the 16-team Waterdown touranment June 10-12; and the
annual Niagara Falls tournament August 5-7.
New GHFL member Smoke of Millgrove are running two tournaments this year:
May 13-15 and Sep 30-Oct. 2 at their home park in Millgrove.
The GHFL Playoff tournament will be held Sept. 9-11 at Ker Park in Niagara
Falls.
Ker Park will also play host to the GHFL All-Stars as they face the
Australian Junior Men's team on Monday June 13 in a doubleheader. Plans are
being finalized to have the games webcast through
<http://www.ballparkradio.com>BallParkRadio.com. More details on this as we
get closer to the event.
The GHFL is affiliating with the Ontario ISC II Home League program and
will send a representative to the ISC II Ontario Cup tournament in
Hillsburgh at the end of August.
