White Sox kick start off season schedule
Thursday May 5th 2005

A three day training camp this weekend for the New Zealand Community Trust
White Sox will be a chance to prepare for a tough few months ahead with
tours of Japan and North America.

The White Sox have had a busy programme in recent times with a home
international series earlier this year and a tour of Australia in March.
Next on the schedule is a one week tour of Japan next month followed by a
trip to North America in late July.

Two separate squads have been named for the tours and White Sox coach Mike
Walsh says the training camp this weekend will be a chance for everyone
involved to plan for the upcoming tours.

“This weekend will be about preparation for both tours and going back to
the basics. There were lots of things we identified on the Australian tour
that did and didn’t work and it is time to put that into practice,” said Walsh.

Walsh believes constant international exposure like the two tours coming up
are what the White Sox need if they are to improve and put in strong
showing at the world championships in China next year.

The training camp this weekend at Rosedale Park, North Harbour will be the
first taste of the White Sox for Lara Andrews of Hutt Valley and Amber
Irving of Auckland. The two teenagers are yet to play a game for the White
Sox but have been named in the team to tour Japan.

The White Sox tour to Japan in June sees them playing games against Chinese
Taipei and two professional Japanese club sides. The late June trip to
North America will see the White Sox competing in the Canada Cup tournament
against international and club teams.

Looking ahead to the tours Walsh says the focus is obviously on winning
games but the team will also take the opportunity to learn from playing at
the top level giving them a better understanding of what it takes both
offensively and defensively to be competitive and win against the best in
the world.
