Ellsworth homers Fargo, N.D. Knights

to opening two wins at ISC Worlds

By Pat Healey

EAU CLAIRE, WIS. - Jeff Ellsworth is making sure he leaves an
impression on Team Canada coach Mark Smith and the 2005 ISC World
Softball Championships here in Eau Claire, Wis.

Ellsworth hit two solo home runs Sunday to lead his Fargo, N.D. Kegel
Black Knights to a 7-0 mercy-run win over Page Brake of Salt Lake
City, Utah. The Alberton native also hit a towering three-run home
run in a five-run second as the Knights opened the Championships
Friday night with a 9-4 win over Patsy's of New York.

Smith, the Canadian Senior Men's team coach, is evaluating players
such as Ellsworth and Steve Langley of Trenton, N.S. during the
Worlds, which is the second phase in a three step process to
determine who makes and doesn't make the Team Canada. The Senior
Men's Canadians in St. Thomas, Ont. is the final step, with the team
being named in October or November.

Sunday, the Alberton Recreation Director went 3-3 and did all his
damage early in the first three innings going 3-for-3 as he hit solo
home runs in the first and second and Darcy Byrne threw five
scoreless innings of three-hit ball to earn the win. It gave the Jon
Kegel-managed Knights some breathing room and a glance at finishing
in the top two in their division and advancing to the playoffs come Thursday.

Ellsworth's first solo slam was a lead off home run as he led the
game off with a bang before he doubled in the third driving home
Adrian Brown and Peter Reimer.

Reimer (2-2, run scored, two RBI), Chad Boom (1-3, run scored, solo
home run in the first inning) and Bjay Boom (1-2) led the way.

For Page Brake, Dave Sonneberg, Brandon Burt and Josh Putnam all went
1-for-2 at the dish.

Byrne struck out 11 of the 18 batters he faced while Losing pitcher
Mike Lorange walked three, allowed seven runs on eight hits and fanned two.

On Friday night, Ellsworth went 2-for-3 at the dish stealing a base,
driving in three runs, being hit by a pitch and scoring twice as he
led the attack,

Winning pitcher Steve Langley, of Trenton, N.S. was 1-3 with a run
scored and an RBI, Duane Clarkson of Winnipegosis, MB. went 1-4 with
two RBI and Peter Reimer of Landmark, MB. was 1-for-3 with a run
scored, walk and RBI. All four will play with the Hitmen when they
head to the Senior Men's Nationals at the end of the month in St. Thomas, Ont.

Tops for Patsy's was second baseman Travis Wilson (3-4, home run, two
RBI, run scored) and Frank Degroat (2-3, home run, two runs scored).

Langley threw six innings of five hit ball allowing three runs- two
earned - while striking out 11. Losing pitcher Marty Grant went the
distance allowing nine runs ons even hits, and fanning eight.

Fargo sits first in Pool C at 2-0 and will also see action Tuesday at
noon CST ( 2 p.m. ADT) against Canadian counterpart Jarvis Merchants
of Ontario, who sits second at 1-0 heading into action Monday night.
Their final round robin game is at 8 a.m. CST Wednesday morning
against Guaranteed Air Freight of Vandalia, Il, who were set to play
Page Brake at 8 a.m. CST Monday morning.

The top two pools - A and B - have spots secured in the playoff round
as the top 10 teams in ISC rankings (who are in these pools) are
secured a spot while the top two from the remaining pools C-H will advance.
