ALBERTON, PEI - Three teams - including one Island team - remain undefeated
after day one of play at the 2005 Tignish Credit Union Bantam Girls Eastern
Canadian Softball Championship here.
The Kingston Autohouse Kobras (Ont. 2), LExpress du Laval (Que. 2) and
Cornwall Cougars (P.E.I. 1) sit at 2-0 after convincing wins on an
entertaining day for softball at Memorial Park, the School field and
Westisles new diamond.
Kingston picked up 23-3 and 13-0 wins over the host Cavendish Produce
Athletics and Dartmouth Diamonds (N.S. 1). The win over the Athletics was
tied 2-2 until the fourth and fifth innings when the floodgates opened as
the Kobras scored 21 times in the two innings to mercy the As.
Laval took wins of 11-3 and 13-6 over Cardigan (P.E.I 2) and the Athletics
while Cornwall demolished the host Summerside Stingers 13-4 before Charley
Johnson pitched a one hit, 10-0 shutout of the Dartmouth Diamonds for the
Cougars second win of the day.
Other scores saw the Judique Royals (N.S. 1) crown the Chaleur team from
New Brunswick 15-3; Sud Ouest earned an opening day 6-4 win over the
Diamonds; the Ontario champion Ancaster Cyclones toppled Au P'tit Mousse
Péninsule Acadienne (N.B. 2) 16-0 and Au P'tit Mousse Péninsule Acadienne
edged the Stingers 7-5.
Day one saw close to two no hitter games one thrown by Cornwalls Johnson,
just back from the Canada Games with PEIs womens softball team, while
Amelia Keech of the Autohouse Kingston Kobras had a no hitter slip away in
the second inning of their win over Dartmouth Diamonds.
