MULGRAVE EAGLES SOAR; TWINS WIN A PAIR; ASPENS UNDEFEATED
The Mulgrave Eagles have quickly bonded to
display excellent team play to reel off three
straight wins, the most impressive a 1-0 blanking
of the host and #1 (Harrahs ranked) St. Thomas
Evergreen Centennials. Pitcher Brian Urguhart
tamed the Cents bats with a masterful mound performance, scattering 5 hits.
The Kitchener Hallman Twins, with momentum from
their impressive 3rd-place finish at the
International Softball Congress (ISC)
Championships in Eau Claire, WI, notched a pair
of Ws, disposing of the Edmonton Alberta Diamond
Express 11-4 and blanking the Prince George Black Bears 6-0.
Defending champion Saskatoon Aspen Interiors
Black Sox used timely hitting to stymie the
up-and-down Vancouver Grey Sox 6-1 behind Sean
Whittens 9 strikeout performance.
Saskatoon, Kitchener and Mulgrave share the top
of the heap with perfect 3-0 records.
Mulgrave GM/Coach Dave Houghton has woven a
cohesive unit that has impressed in three outings
the 1-0 win over St. Thomas has to be viewed as
a major confidence builder, especially for a
lineup that includes such a diverse mix of veterans and rookie talent.
Following the exciting 1-0 loss to Mulgrave, the
host Evergreen Centennials stopped the bleeding
in the evenings featured game, locking horns
with the hardworking Charlottetown Razzys Roadhouse Fawcetts.
Cents pitcher Trevor Wardell tossed an efficient
2-hitter while setting down 6 batters via
strikeouts. St. Thomas Coach Horne used his own
version of Billy-Ball in the 3rd inning. Chris
Wismer opened with a walk, lead-off batter Ryan
Wolfe deftly executed the perfect sacrifice bunt,
and veteran shortstop Chris Jones pulled a pitch
to right field, easily scoring Wismer for the
opening run. Jones then stole 2nd base on a
change-up and with two-out, DP Robbie OBrien
drilled a 1-2 count pitch to centre field,
plating Jones. Fawcetts threatened with
base-runners in the 7th inning, but Cents were
resilient and win 2-0, Wardell notches his 2nd
victory, and Charlottetown drops to 0-3. Fawcetts
hurler Mike Bishop deserved a better fate,
scattering 7 hits, and the PEI squads winless
record is NOT indicative of their fine play in
the opening two days. The Fawcetts have played
exceedingly well in losing two close matches to
top seeds Kitchener and St. Thomas - look for the
Fawcetts first win on Tuesday versus Innerkip Bright Cheese House Eagles.
