KITCHENER UNDEFEATED; JARVIS nips INNERKIP in thriller
On Tuesday, Kitchener Hallman Twins played once,
and maintained the sole unblemished record,
disposing of Saskatoon Aspen Black Sox by a 5-2
score. The Twins are perfect at 4-0, in 1st
place, one-half game ahead of the host St. Thomas
Evergreen Centennials and Nova Scotia’s Mulgrave
Eagles. (Mulgrave suffered its first loss, bowing
5-1 to Newfoundland Impact Signs).
In the evening, rain may have deterred a few
fans, but the faithful were treated to a superb
doubleheader as the round-robin competition
reached the half-way mark. Jarvis Merchants, in a
re-match with Innerkip Bright Cheese House Eagles
from the OASA Provincial Championship game
several weeks ago, scored 6 runs in the top of
the 1st inning. It appeared that a rout was in
progress. However, a poised Innerkip squad scored
a pair in their half of the inning to provide a
hint of what was to come. The Eagles continued to
scramble, and the fans were treated to a superb
and determined late – game rally. Eagles pulled
within one, and had the tying run on base in the
7th, before succumbing to Andrew Phibbs, in
relief of Scott Wagar. Final score – Jarvis 7, Innerkip 6.
In the night-cap, defending champion Saskatoon
suited up for their second match of the day
against host St. Thomas. The Centennials got on
board first, with Craig Crawford drawing a
bases-loaded walk to open the scoring. The Black
Sox tied it at one apiece, until the 6th when
Crawford plated his 2nd RBI, and then scored an
insurance run on a Sean O’Brien single. Final
score St. Thomas 3, Saskatoon 1. (For Saskatoon,
dropping two on Tuesday halted a 13 game winning
streak: 10-0 last year; 3-0 in 2005).
ON FIELD COMPETITION is fierce here at Doug Tarry
Sports Complex. And, off-field, jockeying and
bidding is already generating interest for the
2006 season. Word out of Owen Sound via
Broadcaster Fred Wallace suggests that the Bay
City, arguably the most successful Senior team of
the new millennium (3 Canadian Championships in
last five years), will be operational again in
2006
. Apparently two groups are aligning
stakeholders in two factions - #1, with an
operating budget of $100,000 and a goal to bring
a 6th Canadian Gold medal to Owen Sound. And
faction #2 – an American-based group, represented
by “different” Owen Sound interests, has a 2006
Budget of $200,000 (US funds), and a goal to win
the 2006 ISC, that will be hosted in Kitchener.
Owen Sound’s “deep throat” suggests that both
parties have met with their “money men”. Here in
St. Thomas, a Canadian Champion will be crowned
this week. In Owen Sound in September, perhaps a
future Canadian Champion will be hatched. Could
it be Owen Sound Selects, or Owen Sound Smokers,
or Owen Sound Bay (River) Sharks, or Owen Sound
Spirit/Travellers? For up-dates, check Al’s
