IN THE STANDS
 Dick Parker, fastball legend from
the last generation of Memorial Fastball League
players, enjoying the action at Canadians. Dick
was a threat to opposing teams, and especially to
their pitchers, and was a star in the game in
days of the OFL (Ontario Fastball League).
Suiting up for various Woodstock senior teams,

including the Tornadoes – he suited up played
until he retired at age 38, and has subsequently
played Masters baseball. He has encountered
former fastball legend hurler Dick Hames, who
enjoys throwing the small ball as much from 60’6”
as he did fastball at 46’. Dick noted that
fastball defence doesn’t appear to be as sharp as
in his day, but acknowledged that with the new
technology bats, the ball is put into play with
much more force.
.. And once more it’s
celebration time – for Rosanne Allan of Owen
Sound who is using today to celebrate a “29th”
birthday – Rosanne and her daughter Jessica,
ardent fastball fans from Owen Sound are camping
in the area, enjoying the Canadians, and are
optimistic that Owen Sound will field a team in
the 2006 season

  Also, greetings for long-time
umpire Rico Carty - Happy 65th - returning to
hometown St. Thomas from Edmonton where he
retired in 1998 as a truck driver. Rico had a
distinctive style and flair and was a favorite
with players and fans alike in the Memorial
League and OFL and the many Canadians in which he
officiated
And speaking of umpires,A TIP OF THE
FEDORA to the boys in blue, under the leadership
of Umpire in Chief Brian Van Os of Coquitlam, BC
and Deputy UIC Gabe Babineau of Moncton NB for
their crews’ arbitration in the multitude and
myriad of split-second on-field decisions. While
fans and players will never agree 100% with the
umpires’ decisons, the on-field trios have been
providing fair and competent officiating.
Optimism reigns that pitchers will have adapted
to the nuances of the umpires’ interpretation of
“toeing the rubber”, and that the elimination
round will be free of “illegal pitchs”.
