This was the 19th year for the North Bay World Senior Fastball Tournament
and after losing a heartbreaking final to Manotick (Ottawa) in the 2004
edition of this tournament, Cold Springs Cats went back up this year and
won it this time in workman like precision. Steve "Soupy" Campbell took
the ball for the first three games and delivered bigtime with wins over
Callander, Fraser Tavern (North Bay) and Toronto Bingo's, whose lineup
included longtime and familiar names like Bobby Smith, Frank Marshall, and
Harold Passmore. When all the calculations were done Cold Springs found
themselves ranked 3rd out of the 32 teams and faced Wills Bus Lines
(Hamilton) in the first round of the "AA" playoffs (the top 16 were put in
"AA" and the bottom 16 in "A"). They proved no match as "The Cats"
dominated for a 7-0 win. The quarter-final against Casey's (North Bay)
proved to be the toughest game "The Cats" would have as they eked out a 2-0
win over a very determined Ken Besner on the mound for the local
team. Next up was "The Dog House" out of Sudbury in the semi-finals. Cold
Springs eliminated them with a convincing 11-1 win. All three "Dog House"
pitchers were used to try and stop "The Cats", but on this day Cold Springs
was not to be denied. The final saw "The Cats" take on the "K.C.
Trappers" from Porquis Junction which I was told was near Timmins. Their
ace, big Frank Kujawinski had been mowing teams down to get to the
final. The final was his 3rd game of the day as it was for our go to guy
Gary "Lefty" Vowles. With several hundred fans on hand the Cold Springs
Cats prevailed with a 4-0 victory to take the crown. Gary Vowles was named
MVP for "The Cats" and although no one could argue with his selection Cold
Springs won this tournament as a team with outstanding defence, giving up
only 2 runs all weekend and scoring 47 in the process. Offensively,
although everyone chipped in with many timely hits, I believe most
remembered will be some of the tape measure blasts off the bat of big Paul
"Beej" Foucault.

Congratulations to all The Cold Spring Cats including Mike Racioppo, Mike
McCaw, Rob Ellis, Mike O'Hearn, Gary Vowles, Dave O'Connell, Jeff Brown,
Don Goodfellow, Mark Thompson, Steve Campbell, Paul Foucault, Darren
Crouter, Steve Parker and finally the Manager Ewart "ET" Timlin.
