Oshawa, On
On Wednesday October 26, 2005 the SpinMaster Pitching/Catching School, in
its third year of operation, will again open it's doors to all prospective
female and male pitchers and catchers of all ages who have a desire to
learn and further refine themselves at these defensive positions.
Pitchers will receive instruction from Head Instructor Mal Swift, with 48
years of fastball experience. I will be assisted by my two pitching sons
Jason, a lefty, with 29 years of pitching experience and Ryan, who has
pitched for 23 years. Both junior Swifts pitched in the Oshawa City and
District Fastball League for 2005,which consisted of 17 teams.
Toronto Champion Indians of the OCDFL picked up Ryan to compliment their
pitching staff and play second base as they won the Ontario Challenge Cup
in Hillsburg, On. and won a birth in the 2006 International Softball
Congress II, Tournament of Champions in Kitchener, On. in August. Ryan was
named MVP in the final game as he hit a double and a two run homer to help
win the championship game.
Catchers will be instructed by Matthew Swift, my middle son, who has 26
years of playing experience. This summer Matthew caught for his brothers
with the Durham Eagles Intermediate Men's team.
Pitchers will learn proper position, ball grip, arm action, hip
thrust/rotation, follow through and fielding position. Pitches taught will
be peel drop, peel change drop, twist drop, twist change drop, curve,
change curve, and knuckle ball to appropriate ages. Pitchers will also be
tested on accuracy and speed, plus many drills will be implemented.
Pitchers must provide their own catchers. Only catchers taking instruction
will pay the catcher fee.
Catchers will learn ready position, relaxed position, catching above and
below waist, catchers stance, bat clearance, catching ball, grip and step,
the throw, follow through, blocking balls, making a play at the plate
(receiving throw / making tag ) and catching a foul ball. Many catching
drills will also be added to this section of the School.
The School will be at Durham College's gym on Wednesday night for one hour,
either from 7 to 8 pm or 8 - 9 pm ( new times this year )according to age
group. The gym is at the north west corner of Durham College's campus at
the Athletic Centre.
Registration will be on a first come, first come basis. The cost of the 20
nights will be $300.00 / player, paid before or on October 26,2005
the first night, if there is room. These fees also cover insurance. Please
