----------
Wild Weekend for Gee Gees
It was an up and down weekend for the Garnett and Grey in Jordan on
the weekend for the Brock Tournament. The team played well in
extending its streak to 7-0 and a lead in the Eastern Division.
However, the good news was dampered in the first game when Gee Gee
pitcher Lindsey Hutton suffered a break in her foot. It happened in
the second inning of the first game as she drove in Heather Huggins
with an RBI triple to open the scoring for the Gee Gees. As she slid
into third base ahead of the tag she twisted her foot the wrong way
causing it to snap. The Gee Gees are blessed with an in house medical
staff with Jen Leppard in her third year of Medicine and Nicky Dunlop
with a Masters in Human Kinetics. The team was very grateful to
MacMaster University for offering their physical therapists and to
Keith Hibbett, Allisons dad for driving Lindsey to the hospital.
Lindsey had pitched a full game of shutout softball the week before
against Guelph and started the game strong against Brock before her
injury. However, the team is lucky to have a strong pitching staff
and Jillian Taylor picked up where her teammate left off with a very
strong outing allowing two runs on 4 hits. The offense started strong
against Brock as well with Lindsey McLaughlin and Heather Huggins
leading the charge. Lindsey was 2-3 with two doubles and a pair of
RBI's while Heather Huggins turned in her best offensive performance
of the year with a single, a double and one run scored. Shannon
Lundrigan drove in a run in the first inning to cap the Gee Gee
scoring. A 5-2 win against a strong Brock team was the final.

On the second half of a double header while most of the athletes and
coaches minds still with Lindsey at the hospital the team took out
their frustrations on another strong MacMaster team. The ground rules
of the diamonds in Jordan left most of the team confused, several of
the teams hitters seemed to be knocking the ball off the tree in
Center Field, or the Fieldhouse in Right. Lynn Kearns took the ball
for the Gee Gees and walked the first batter but settled down
immediately. The leadoff batter scored for the Mauraders but that
would be all the Gee Gee defense would allow. The defense and
pitching was sparkling all weekend allowing only 3 runs in 3 games.
Lynn pitched 5 strong innings for the team before conceding to Ashley
Sands for the final 3 outs. The offense stayed strong and seemed to
get stronger as the weekend went on. The theme of the weekend for the
offense was execution and precision as the team improved their short
game as well as situational hitting. Danna Masters was back to her
old tricks at the top of the order with 2 singles and two runs
scored. Sarah Thompson contributed with another pair of singles and
runs. Jen Leppard and Lindsey McLaughlin were red hot all weekend
causing headaches for opposing pitchers and catchers. Heather Huggins
stayed hot with a double and a single. Erin Durant contributed with a
pair of bunt singles. The team ran to an 8-1 win in a game that
lasted only 6 innings.

The team woke up to dark clouds and rain on Sunday morning that
forced the cancellation of the teams first game against cross town
rival Carleton. The two Capital City teams will make it up either
during the week or add it to the final league weekend in Ottawa. That
left the team with only one game on Sunday before the long drive
home. The team would like to thank the hosts, Brock as well as the
entire Grounds Crew for all of their hard work on Sunday to make the
diamonds playable. The offense peaked on Sunday with everyone
contributing behind a gem from Ashley Sands. She allowed no runs on 3
hits and was backed by very solid defense. Jillian Taylor set the
tone for the game in the first inning with a leadoff single and a
stolen base before a Jen Leppard double scored her. Jen stayed in
high gear going 4-4 with a pair of doubles and a pair of singles to
go along with 2 RBI's. Sam Pantlone also had a good day with a key
sacrifice bunt to set up the teams first run and a pair of doubles at
the top of the order. Nicky Dunlop had a great day with a ripped
single through the inflield and a two run double in the 6th. Allion
Hibbett drove in a pair of runs with a single in front of her
hometown crowd. The team had its best offensive performance of the
year as they raced to an 9-0 victory in 6 innings.

The team heads to Byron Optimist Park in London next week to take on
the West Division as well as Queens and Carleton. As always fan
support is much appreciated. See you in Byron.
