Kitchener, ON
So the Kitchener Fastball League season is once again finished and the
Phoenix Outlaws have once again been crowned the league champions.
The first round of the playoffs saw Phoenix take on the team that always
seem to have their number in the regular season, the Cambridge Reds. But
Phoenix stepped up and took out the Reds 2 straight.
The Breslau Majors, one of the great surprises in the KFL this year as they
stepped up from being the B Side winners last years to finishing 2nd in the
regular season, saw first round action against the Breslau Juniors. The
Juniors were coming off a good year with appearances at the provincial and
the nationals but could not continue their luck against the Majors, who won
the series 2-0.
The third place Classics faced the 6th place Merchants in a series that saw
the Classics come out on top 2-0.
The most evenly-matched series of the first round was between the #4 Smoke
and the #5 Thunder as both teams had the same point total in the regular
season and split the season series 1-1. Smoke finished 4th due to run
differential in those 2 games. But the Thunder, with a number of players
coming off a World Championship at the ISC II's, beat the Smoke 2 games to 0.
The 2nd round had Phoenix face the Thunder. Even with Thunder being the
only seed to upset in the first round, Phoenix finished them 3-0 to advance
to the finals.
The other semi had the Breslau Majors face the Classics in what could be
called the Battle of the Ages. A young upstart Breslau team felt they had
something to prove to the league but could not overcome the experience of
the Classics, dropping the series 3-0.
This set up the finals. Phoenix, defending champs and regular season
winners against the 3rd place Classics. Phoenix took the series 3-1 with
the final game ending in controversial fashion as the Classics were looking
to make in interesting in the bottom of the 7th.
The B Side this year included, the Men from the Glen, the Waterloo Midgets,
the Breslau Midgets, the Selects and the Bulldogs. After a round robin
series took place, the top two records were the Bulldogs and the Breslau
Midgets who faced off in a best of 3 series. Breslau won the first one but
the Bulldogs won the 2nd, making sure that the series went the distance.
The Breslau Midgets took the final game in a back and forth contest that
saw the lead change hands a number of times.
So congratulations to the Phoenix Outlaws and the Breslau Midgets for their
great seasons and to the rest of the league for providing some interesting
moments and some outstanding fastball.
And I would like to thank every member of the Executive, every ball player,
coach, manager and fan that helped support another great season of KFL
ball. Can't wait to see all of you next year.
You can relive the KFL season on our website where in the near future,
there will be a few photos available of the finals.
