Gee Gees Finish Strong
Very strong weekend for the Gee Gees as they wrapped up their final league
games. The team seems to be peaking at the right time heading into the
OIWFA Championship in Guelph next weekend. The team went 5-0 this weekend
to finish the season 15-2 which ties them for first place with the
Universtiy of Western Ontario. Their 7-4 loss to Western in London two
weeks ago gives UWO first place overall and puts the Gee Gees in a strong
second place.
The team opened the rainy, wet weekend with a game against the Carleton
University Ravens. The team put on a show for the hometown fans with their
bestt offensive game of the year, exploding for 17 runs in 3 innings.
Rookie Elissa Sivel was magnificent, keeping the Ravens off balance en
route to a 1-hitter. A very impressive offensive performance from a team
that saw all 9 starting hitters cross the plate at least once. Their hard
work is beginning to pay off.
The second game of the weekend lasted over 24 hours. Queens got to a quick
start scoring 3 runs in the first 3 innings before rain forced both teams
off the field. The Gee Gees had spent most of the morning working on the
field to ensure it would be playable but this final spurt of rain was the
final straw. Despite sunny weather the rest of Saturdays games had to be
delayed until Sunday. The team would like to note Mark Gough from Edmonton,
Alberta and one of the members of Softball Canada's Officials Development
Committee and one of Softball Canada's Deputy Umpires in Chief was in the
stands for Saturdays game and agreed to work the game until it was delayed.
We would like to thank Mark for his effort and are very lucky to have such
high level officials always willing to work our games. The game continued
on Sunday with the bases loaded and one out with Sarah Thompson hitting.
Sarah opened the floodgates with a double that kicked off a 9 run innging
for the Gee Gees. Shannon Lundrigan ripped a double to cash in a pair of
runs and Allison Hibbett kept up her torrid pace with an RBI double of her
own. Ashley Sands had a clutch hit to move over a pair of runners and set
up the top of the order which kept the inning rolling. The game finished
10-3 with all the runs coming in one inning. Another very impressive
performance for the offense. Jillian Taylor had a very solid game and had
no difficulty picking up where she left off the day before. A very
impressive weekend for all of the Gee Gees young pitchers.
Lynn Kearns took the ball for the Garnet and Grey against Carleton. She
threw one of her best games of the year allowing 4 runs over 7 innings. She
sparkled, using all of her pitches effectively and keeping the Ravens off
balance. Allison Hibbett was behind the plate and did a masterful job of
calling the game. The offense kept rolling scoring 8 runs. Heather Huggins
had her best offensive game of the year with 2 monster doubles and a triple
to centerfield. In a smaller park all 3 hits would have been over the
fence. Jen Leppard had a very strong game with 3 hits in 3 trips to the
plate. Lynn helped her own cause with 3 hits as well including a monster
double off the left field wall. Rookie Sam Pantalone had a very clutch game
with a pair of hits for RBI's and a run scored. Final score was 8-4.
The team matched up against Queens in their 3rd game of the day. Jill
Taylor took the ball again for the Gee Gees and was dominant over 7
innings. She seemed to get stronger as the game went on using only 7
pitches to record the last 6 outs of the game. She allowed 1 run on 3 hits
in 7 innings. She has been a very welcome addition to the team that is rich
with young pitching talent. The offense worked hard to keep everyone on
their toes with 3 runs in the first inning and another in their last at
bat. They showcased their speed and power at the top of the order with
Danna Masters and Erin Durant. The two cause opposing teams fits with their
ability to alternatively lay bunts or drive slaps past charging infielders.
They both ingite the team as they did in this game with a pair of runs
right off the bat in the first inning. Pam Hrick had a strong day at the
plate with a pair of long doubles, but the highlight of the day belonged to
Nicole Dunlop. In her 3rd year as a Gee Gee and playing in front of the
home crowd, she launched her first homerun over the fence. After many near
misses off of fences it was very nice to see her succeed. Congratulations
Nicole.
The final game of the weekend saw two tired, wet and cold teams from Ottawa
compete. Ottawa defeated Carleton 4-3 in the final game of the 2005 regular
season. Not to be overlooked this weekend is the defense. Shannon Lundrigan
made a pair of jaw dropping plays at SS that took her behind third base to
reach the ball. Both Gee Gee catchers were working hard on picking off
runners and the infield and outfield were very solid. The team looks to be
in good shape as they head to Guelph for the playoffs.
The team would like to thank all of their volunteers for their support over
the weekend and a big thank you to the fans who braved the wind and rain to
watch their team. A contingent of their fans will follow the team to
Guelph, and it is very much appreciated. The team would also like to thank
the umpires who as always provided an elite level crew for these games.
Zone Umpire in Chief Dick Coleman was the one responsible for the crew in
his last day on the job. The team would like to extend a heartfelt thanks
to Dick for all his help and support over the years. We would like to
acknowledge Mark Gough from Edmonton and Moose Gibson from Moose Jaw
Saskatchewan for flying into Ottawa to work our games. Thanks guys.
A very solid wrap up to the 2005 season. Looking foward to seeing everyone
in Guelph. The full draw sheet will be available later on the week so
please check our website for our game times.
