Canada defeats Nebraska in 12 innings: Wraps up Event with a 5-1 record
October 16th, 2005

(Ottawa) Earlier tonight, Canada’s National Women’s Softball team defeated 
the Nebraska
Huskers 2-1 in 12 innings.  With the win Canada finishes the Nebraska Fall 
Classic with
a 5-1 record.  Canada lost the first game in the doubleheader by a 9-1 
score earlier
this afternoon.

Nebraska took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning by scoring a run off 
of Ashley
Lanz (Winnipeg, MB).  Lanz would throw for 4 innings; allow 3 hits, 1 run, 
walk 3
batters, and strike out 3 in a no decision.

Canada tied the game in the top of the 6th inning.  Kristy Odamura 
(Richmond, BC) hit a
1 out double, followed by a bunt single by Noémie Marin (Acton Vale, QC) 
that put
runners at the corners.  Marin then stole second, and Odamura headed for 
home plate.
The Huskers cut off the throw to 2nd and attempted to throw out Odamura at 
home plate
but were unsuccessful.

In the top of the 12th inning, with Marin starting the inning at 2nd, 
former Husker
Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) sacrificed Marin over to 3rd base.  Alison 
Bradley
(Pinkerton, ON) then walked to put runners at 1st and 3rd.  Erin Cumpstone 
(Saskatoon,
SK) followed up with a bloop to right field that scored Marin.  Auburn 
Sigurdson
(Surrey, BC) retired the side in the bottom of the 12 inning securing 
Canada’s 2-1 win.

Up next for the Women’s National team is the selection of 17 athletes that 
will
represent Canada at the 2005 Pan American Championships held in Guatemala 
City from
November 26th - December 4th, 2005. The Pan American Championships serve as 
a qualifier
for the 2007 Pan American Games and the 2006 World Championships.  That 
roster will be
named this week.
