Power hitting Ramblers unbeaten
Sunday October 23rd 2005
Blazing bats from Ramblers has seen them go through round robin play
unbeaten and they look to be in prime position heading into the finals
tomorrow of the Doreen Dalton premier one men's tournament.
National club champions Ramblers have been dominant at Fraser Park, Lower
Hutt with power hitting from the likes of Nathan Nukunuku, Donny Hale,
Travis Wilson and Scott O'Neale proving too hot to handle.
Taking on Porirua, Ramblers set the game alight in the first inning when
lead off hitter Nukunuku picked up a single and then came home via a huge
automatic home run off the bat of Wilson over the centre field fence.
Automatic home runs were a feature of the game as O'Neale added another in
the first inning and Hale picked up a double in the third and fifth innings
to give Ramblers a convincing victory 6-0.
Ramblers continued that winning form in their second game of the day as
they overcame Poneke Kilbirnie 2-0.
In the opposite section defending champions Miramar lead the way despite a
surprise loss against Hutt Valley Dodgers 6-2 at the end of the day today.
The defending champions Miramar picked up two wins earlier in the day
defeating Giants 10-0, Hutt City United 4-1.
Miramar started strong in their first game as they defeated Giants of
Wairarapa 10-0. A feature of that game was the hitting of Todd Grego who
picked up two hits including four RBI's and a big automatic home run over
the centre field fence. Miramar managed eight hits in the game and won it
in four innings with the mercy rule invoked as the defending champions were
up by more then seven runs.
The crucial clash of the day for Miramar came when they took on Hutt City
United with that game deciding the section winner. In a close game Miramar
came out on top 4-1 with consistent hitting proving the difference. Miramar
picked up seven hits in the game scoring runs in the second, third and
fifth innings.
With round robin play completed the teams head into the finals tomorrow
with Miramar playing Poneke Kilbirnie and Ramblers taking on Hutt City
United in the semi finals in the morning. The winners of the semi finals
will move on to the final at 2pm.
The remaining seven teams in the tournament will play off in the plate section.
