Host side on top at Doreen Dalton tournament
Saturday October 22nd 2005
Hutt City United has made a strong start to the Doreen Dalton tournament
today as they sit at the top of their section with an unbeaten 3-0 record.
The Hutt Valley club side are the hosts of the premier one men's tournament
played at Fraser Park in Lower Hutt over Labour Weekend. The home team
opened the tournament on Friday night with a 5-0 win over Hutt Valley
Dodgers and backed up it up today with a 1-0 victory over Northcote and 5-3
result over Giants.
Victory over Northcote was a close run thing with the only run of the game
coming in the first inning when Brad Baker scampered home on the hit by Pat
Humphries.
Northcote had their chances in the game going closest in the bottom of the
sixth inning when they loaded up the bases with only one down. However HCU
pitcher Jeremy Manly poured cold water on Northcote hitters picking up
consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.
Manly was a dominant feature on the mound as he faced 25 batters taking 12
strikeouts while giving up three hits and two walks.
Also unbeaten after the first day of the tournament are Ramblers and
Miramar who have both had two wins.
The national club champions Ramblers have shown strong form as they opened
the day with blazing hitting picking up a 5-3 win over Hutt Valley
Cardinals followed by a 2-0 victory over Johnsonville.
Miramar are the defending champions and they have shown they mean business
as they look to win it again. They opened up with a 2-1 win over Northcote
and have followed it up with a 5-0 victory against Stoke.
It will be a turn up for the record books though if Miramar take out the
title again as no team has ever won the title twice in the tournaments nine
year history.
Round robin play in the tournament wraps up tomorrow with five rounds of
games ahead of the playoffs on Monday.
