National League coaches throw their cards on the table
Friday October 28th 2005

Coaches in the New Zealand Community Trust men’s and women’s
NationalLeague have shown their hand today with the naming of
protectedplayers.

Today was the day when teams had to name their initial squads
withcoaches having the option of naming a full squad of 14 players
or namingas few as eight and selecting their remaining players
from thedraft.

Of the women’s teams named today there are places open in every
squad fordraft selections. Both Wellington and Central Vikings
have named 10players each with both requiring pitchers in the
draft. Central Vikingsplaced third in the National League last
season and will be looking foreven more this time around. Once
again pitcher Michal Tangaroa will bethe cornerstone of the team.

Wellington has lost a number of class player’s form last season
and coachWayne Nichols has included a number of fresh new faces
in his list ofprotected players. A lot of responsibility will
fall on the shoulders ofNew Zealand Community Trust White Sox
pitcher Lisa Such.

Auckland and Southern Pride have selected nine players each so
far withthe Southern side looking to the draft for both of theirpitchers.

Defending champs Hutt Valley won’t be naming their team until
Mondayafter coach Naomi Shaw received an exemption to name her
side lateallowing her to view the form of players this weekend
in the Saintspremier one women’s tournament.

On the men’s side of the competition defending champs Wellington
and lastseasons runners up Auckland have both named a full squad
and look strong.Wellington coach Wayne Saunders has stuck to
the winning formula fromlast year with the team to be led from
the mound by New Zealand CommunityTrust Black Sox pitchers Marty
Grant and Tane Richardson.

Auckland also have the fire power to challenge for the title
again withinternational class pitchers such as Thomas Cameron
and Heinie Shannon tolead the way backed up by class players
like Taifau Matai, Roman Gabriel,Nathan Nukunuku and Lyndon Andrew.

North Harbour and Central Vikings have each named eight players
and lookto have strengthened their teams from last season. North
Harbour haspicked up NZCT Black Sox captain Jarrad Martin to
handle the pitchingduties. Central Vikings on the other hand
have gained pitcher Hone MarkSinnot from Hutt Valley while Black
Sox catcher Bevan Martin will play afull role in the team on
the diamond rather than coaching as he did lastseason.

Southern Pride are in the unenviable position of having to go
the playerdraft for both of their pitchers but coach Glen Roff
named 10 protectedplayers today with the majority of them having
past National Leagueexperience behind them.

Joining Southern Pride in the search for a pitcher will be Hutt
Valleywho has named 10 protected players today but no pitchers.

Coaches who still need athletes to complete their squads will
go theplayer draft in Wellington next weekend where the final
selections willbe made.

Key players likely to be chased include NZCT White Sox players
MalemeWilliams and Ngamoko Hiku while in the men’s league NZCT
Black Sox hurlerMichael Gaiger will catch the eye of coaches
looking for a pitcher.

The 2005/06 National League will get underway on November 19th
with threeweekends of round robin play ahead of the finals series
to be held inWellington on December 18th and 19th.
