Central Vikings women get a taste of victory in national league
Saturday November 26th 2005

It has been a successful day on the diamond for Central Vikings in the New 
Zealand Community Trust women's National League at Saxton Park, Nelson today.

The central side has picked up their first wins in the league with two 
victories today over the home side Southern Pride 8-4 and 6-4.

Central Vikings came from behind in the first game after the home team took 
an early two run advantage in the first inning. It wasn't until the third 
inning that Central Vikings took control of the game as they scored three 
runs and then added another four in their next at bat.

Stand out performers with the bat for Central Vikings were Rachel Kairau, 
Rise Kato and Sapphire Paul who all picked up two hits in the game.

The home team rallied pulled back two runs in the fifth inning but it 
wasn't enough as Central Vikings added one more run of their own in the 
seventh inning to round out the game.

On the mound Michal Tangaroa was doing the job for Central Vikings she 
faced 31 batters taking three strikeouts while giving up 10 hits and two 
walks.

For Southern Pride Courtney Maihi and Phillipa Lee shared the duties on the 
mound, Maihi started the game and she faced 30 batters giving up nine hits 
and four walks while taking three strikeouts. Lee was introduced into the 
game in the sixth inning and she faced seven batters and gave up three hits 
and two walks.

Game two of the double header was tighter as the two teams went toe to toe 
in the first inning each scoring three runs. Central Vikings went further 
ahead in the second inning adding another three runs while Southern Pride 
couldn't get back on the scoreboard until the sixth inning when they picked 
up on run.

Top performers with the bat in game two were Michal Tangaroa for Central 
Vikings and Maleme Williams who picked up two hits each.

The pitching duties for both teams were shared with Yvette Britts starting 
for Central Vikings before being replaced in the fourth inning by Michal 
Tangaroa. Britts faced 16 batters and gave up four hits while taking two 
strikeouts, Tangaroa also faced 16 batters and she took three strikeouts 
while giving up three hits.

For Southern Pride Phillipa Lee started the game and faced 13 batters 
giving up four hits and two walks. Courtney Maihi came into the game in the 
fourth inning and she faced 11 batters giving up four hits.
