Winless weekend puts Southern Pride out of women’s national league
Sunday November 27th 2005

A weekend of losses has ended the hopes of Southern Pride in the New
Zealand Community Trust women’s National League.

Home advantage at Saxton Park, Nelson has not been enough for the Southern
team as they have suffered two losses today against the defending champions
Hutt Valley 7-2 and 6-1. Today’s losses came on the back of two defeats
yesterday against Central Vikings 8-4 and 6-4.

Going into this weekend Southern Pride were well aware of their need for
victories as today’s games were their last in round robin play. Despite the
need for wins the best Southern Pride could manage was a close loss against
Central Vikings to give them one bonus point.

In the games today against Hutt Valley it was a familiar story for Southern
Pride as they struggled to deny runs and then scored too few of their own.

Hutt Valley took control of game one in the second inning when they scored
two runs courtesy of a home run by Katrina Stockford. The defending
champions added another run in the fifth inning and then closed the game
out in the sixth inning with a further four runs.

Southern Pride pegged back two runs but it was never going to be enough as
they only managed to string together two hits in the game.

The Southern Pride batters struggled against Hutt Valley pitcher Jana
Vacikova, the Czech Republic hurler faced 25 batters giving up just two
hits and one walk while taking three strikeouts.

Courtney Maihi was on the mound for Southern Pride she faced 28 batters
conceding six hits and four walks while taking three strikeouts.

Game two of the double header followed a similar pattern to the first game
with Hutt Valley being the first to score. The home side pulled one run
back in the second inning but then Hutt Valley went into overdrive scoring
a further five runs in reply and extinguishing any hopes Southern Pride may
have had.
With the two victories today the defending champions Hutt Valley join
Auckland at the top of the points table with one weekend of round robin
play still to go.
