Kitchener Awarded 2007 ISC Men’s World Fastball Tournament

KITCHENER - The International Softball Congress (ISC) has announced that
both the 2006 and 2007 ISC Men’s World Fastball Tournaments will be held in
Kitchener, Ontario under the direction of Kitchener Fastball Promotions
(KFP) and the City of Kitchener.

The 2006 tournament dates are August 11-19, while the 2007 tournament runs
from August 10-18.

Kitchener, which last hosted an ISC World Fastball Tournament in 2002, was
selected to host the 2007 championships after Decatur, IL, withdrew as host
on November 11.

At that time the ISC approached Tom Clancy, representing KFP, and asked if
Kitchener – they were earlier awarded the 2006 championships – would be
able to conduct the 2007 event.

The ISC expressed its complete confidence in Kitchener’s quality facilities
and in the City’s ability to organize and stage top-quality back-to-back
tournaments.

“The ISC Men’s World Fastball Tournament is a major sports event and we
look forward to welcoming all participating teams and players back to
Kitchener, and to staging consecutive world-class tournaments,” said Mayor
Carl Zehr.

The tournaments will offer local fans the opportunity to see some of the
best fastball players in the world under extremely competitive conditions.
The ISC ll Men’s Fastball Tournament of Champions will also give a number
of local teams the chance to compete in their home province, where there is
a lot of interest in the sport.

This represents the first time that back-to-back ISC championships have
been awarded to the same city since the 1960s when Rock Island, Ill.,
hosted the event, and the potential financial spin-offs are expected to be
considerable.

“We fully support their choice to bring the tournaments back to Kitchener,”
said Todd Letts, president and CEO of the Greater Kitchener Waterloo
Chamber of Commerce. “The tournaments will have a great impact on our local
economy, as well as a positive effect on our community pride.”

“It’s huge,” said Clancy, who noted that the financial impact during the
2002 tournament, which he chaired, was about $5 million. “It’s probably the
biggest sports event in Kitchener in the next several years, and we expect
the impact this time around to be over $7 million each year.”

A total of 84 teams will compete in both 2006 and 2007, compared with the
64 teams that competed in 2002. Teams will play a round-robin format, which
means they’ll have a day off to go shopping and see local sights.

In addition to the main tournaments, KFP will also host the Bridge to
Future skills clinics for young local players of varying skills and ages,
and a session for Special Olympic athletes.

The 2006 championships, called the Schneider’s ISC Men’s World Fastball
Tournament, boasts two major sponsors in Kitchener-based Schneider Foods
and Molson’s Canada along with many supporting sponsors and over 600
volunteers.

In anticipation of the tournaments, the City of Kitchener is upgrading the
Peter Hallman Ball Yard, adding permanent seating for an additional 800
fans to the main diamond. In addition, the fencing behind home plate and
along the first and third base foul lines will be moved to allow for more
permanent seating behind home plate and the placement of portable bleachers
along the lines. In making these adjustments, the two dugouts, which are
now at ground level, will be dug two feet into the ground to help improve
the sightlines for spectators.
