Auckland women take unbeaten record into finals
Sunday December 11th 2005

Auckland will go into the finals series of the New Zealand Community Trust
women’s National League next weekend as the team to beat given their
unbeaten record in round robin play.

Auckland maintained their perfect record today with two victories at Fraser
Park, Lower Hutt including a narrow 2-1 win over the defending champions
Hutt Valley. The winning of the game for Auckland came in just the first
inning when they picked up two runs with lead off batter Atsuko Tanaka and
Helen Packer both crossing home plate.

Hutt Valley pulled back one run in the fourth inning when Hiromi Sugiyama
scored. From there Auckland defended their one run lead well and there was
no further scoring in the game.

Pitcher Carina Hale was elusive on the mound for Auckland as she faced 24
batters giving up three hits and one run while taking nine strikeouts. Jana
Vacikova had the duties on the mound for Hutt Valley she faced 28 batters
giving up five hits and two walks while taking seven strikeouts.

There was a lot more hitting in Auckland’s other win today as they smashed
Central Vikings 12-3. Consistent hitting was the winning of the game for
Auckland as the team picked up 15 hits with the stand out performers being
Amanda Preston with four hits and Fiona Timu with three hits.

The results today weren’t all bad for the defending champions Hutt Valley
today as they came from behind to defeat Wellington 6-2. Hutt Valley won
the game in the top of the seventh inning scoring four runs on the back of
seven hits. Wellington had the right of reply in the bottom of the inning
but the team from the capital didn’t fire with the bat giving Hutt Valley
the win.

Joining Auckland in the top four will be Hutt Valley, Wellington and
Central Vikings. The finals series will be held at Hataitai Park,
Wellington next weekend.
