Southern Pride men secure top four spot
Sunday December 11th 2005

Southern Pride has made history for their franchise in the New Zealand
Community Trust Men’s National League today by qualifying for the top four
finals series.

The Southern side secured their top four spot with an upset 5-3 win over
North Harbour at Hataitai Park this morning.

The hero today for Southern Pride was Matthew Telfer who won the game for
the southern men when in the bottom of the sixth inning when he smashed the
ball over the left field fence with a runner on base to give his side a two
run advantage and break a 3-3 deadlock.

In a tight game the scoring started in the first at bat when North Harbour
led off with two runs before Southern Pride replied with three runs of
their own in the bottom of the inning. North Harbour added one more run in
the second inning to level up the scores and that is how it remained until
the sixth inning when Matthew Telfer stepped to the plate and won the game
for his team.

On the mound Lewis Acker started the game for Southern Pride he faced 23
batters giving up six hits, one walk and three hits while taking two
strikeouts. Michael Gaiger came into the game as relief pitcher in the
seventh inning and closed out the game facing four batters giving up two
hits while picking up one strikeout.

For North Harbour Jarrad Martin had the duties on the mound he faced 29
batters giving up nine hits, three walks and five runs while taking five
strikeouts.

Southern Pride couldn’t back up their upset win later in the day in the
second game of the double header against North Harbour. For game two the
Harbour team were on fire with the bat winning the game 7-1 with all the
runs coming via home runs.

For North Harbour Brad Rona, Duane Jerard and Dave Bishop all smashed the
ball over the fence in the first inning before Jarrad Martin added another
in the third inning, then Scott Higgins picked up one more in the fourth
and Dave Bishop picked up his second home run of the game in the fifth inning.

Southern Pride could manage just one run in the fourth inning when Chris
Eden Huria scored on a hit by Scott Cartwright after originally getting on
base with a double to left field.
With his team in form with the bat pitcher Jarrad Martin was strong on the
mound for North Harbour. He faced 17 batters giving up three hits and two
walks while taking five strikeouts. Jim Grego was brought into the game in
the fifth inning as relief pitcher and he faced 12 batters taking five
strikeouts while giving up three hits and one walk.

For Southern Pride it was a tough day on the mound for Michael Gaiger who
pitched the full game. He faced 27 batters giving up eight hits and two
walks while taking five strikeouts.

Going into the final day of round robin play there was one other team in
contention for the top four spot in the men’s national league and that was
Hutt Valley but they had the tough task ahead of them of defeating the
defending champions Wellington twice.

Hutt Valley started there assault on the top four spot well with an upset
5-4 win over Wellington in the first game but they couldn’t back that up in
game two going down 5-0.

On the back of today’s results joining Southern Pride in the finals series
will be Wellington, Auckland and North Harbour. All four teams will meet at
Hataitai Park, Wellington next weekend to battle it out for the title.
