Defending champs do it tough at women's NPC
Monday January 2nd 2006
The opening day of the New Zealand Community Trust Women's National
Provincial Cup has proved to be a tough hit out for defending champions
Southland who recorded a win and a loss today.
In games at Prince Edward Park, Papakura today Southland stumbled at the
first hurdle in their quest to defend the title. The Southern side tasted
defeat in their opening game against Canterbury going down 5-3 before
bouncing back at the end of the day beating Waikato 11-4.
The women's NPC is played over four days with the 11 teams entered split
into two pools for round robin play before the top four sides move on to
battle it out for the title.
While it has been a tough day for Southland five teams have gone through
day one unbeaten. In section one Canterbury, Hutt Valley and Counties have
the perfect record while in section two Auckland and Hawkes Bay both
recorded two wins.
A feature of the first day of play has been big hitting with a lot of runs
scored in many of the games as teams look to be in strong form early in the
tournament.
In the NZCT Under 19 Boy's National Championships at Canterbury Foundation
Park, Christchurch defending champions Auckland are unbeaten after day one
while the home side Canterbury have also started well with two wins.
