TidBits - January 2006 - ISC Travel League of Eastern Canada version

For those not familiar with tidbits, its ballyard rumours, nothing
more. Maybe no fact here at all, but same kind of stories you hear in the
ballpark. Only those mentioned can confirm or deny these stories,
and traditionally they tell us nada, or hardly ever, but they can
straighten the story out any time.

We should add that there are guidelines for posting to the list and for
submitting TidBits, see them at:

ISC Travel League of Eastern Canada – Tid Bits from January 2006 AGM

TidBits heard around the Coffee Machine at Grand Valley Golf Course near
Kitchener this morning. With many Ontario teams in attendance, lots of
updates and rumours. Bottom line, looks like a good year for Fastball in
Ontario in 2006!

Five of the seven teams from the League in 2005 are returning this year.
Norwich and Six Nations will not be back in 2006 – however Six Nations
hopes to return to the League in 2007.

The returning teams from 2005 are:
Palermo Athletics
Kitchener Hallman Twins
Innerkip Bright Cheese House Eagles
Jarvis Merchants
Niagara Snappers

Joining the League for 2006 are two new teams:
Ohsweken Redmen
Orillia Riversharks

The teams will each play 24 games in an interlocking schedule that will
include at least one weekend of play in June.

The new team from Orillia Ontario hopes to play up to 8 games against their
fellow league teams on June 9-11. This is not finalized yet but the league
hopes to get in 16 games over the weekend in Orillia, using the same park
where the annual Casino Rama tournament is held. This will not be a
tournament however should provide fans in the area more than a glimpse of
the talent on the seven teams in the ISC Travel League of Eastern Canada.
While Orillia hope to play up to 8 games that weekend, the other teams will
be playing 3-5 games each. Many of the other teams will still be looking
forward to playing each of the teams at home in the schedule. The final
schedule will be released after the next league meeting on March 12.

The ISC Area Qualifier is going to be played in Innerkip the weekend of
June 16-17 (Friday and Saturday). An ISC II eastern qualifier will be held
in Innerkip the same weekend, and an ISC II western qualifier will be
played in Fitzroy Harbour the same weekend.

The League Playoff will be played the weekend of July 28-30, location TBA.
Hosts wishing to bid on this tournament will bring their bids to the March
12 meeting.

All of the teams at the AGM were strongly represented this morning,
bringing in their delegates to make a bid to get into the league and to
discuss the schedules for the season.

So, everyone is asking, “Who are the Orillia Riversharks”, well the best
way to answer that is to give the names I jotted down while Manager Denny
Bruckert was refreshing his coffee. Here we go (with apologies for spelling
errors, I cannot copy as fast as I once could):

PLAYER PERSONNEL:
Frank Cox – P
Robbie O’Brien – P
Michael White – P
Sean O’Brien – C
Pat Graham – 1b
Todd Moyer – 1b/DH
Rhys Casley – 2b
David Boys – SS
Pat McKintosh – 3b
Dereck Jackman – infield
Ian Fehrman – OF
Mike Taylor – OF
Andy Jackson – OF
Stacy McLean – OF
Dan Loney – OF
And a look for a few more names to be added.

MANAGEMENT:
Robert Nydick – President / Chair of the Board / Sponsor
Dennis Bruckert – Field Manager / Director of Player Recruitment
Julian Fernandez – 1st base coach / Catcher
Peter J. Porcelli, Jr. – strategic planning
Lee Jacques - Coach
Paul Barnetson – Vice President / Sponsor / Board of Directors

As noted above, the full league schedule will be finalized at the next
League meeting on March 12. At that time we also hope to find out what
tournaments each of the teams in the League will be playing in, in addition
to the Area Qualifier and the League Playoffs.

My own informal straw poll of the teams present indicated a very low
interest in participation in the 2006 Canadian Championships in Prince
George at the end of the season, citing the distance to travel. Most of the
teams indicated a strong interest in gearing up for 2007 when the Canadians
will be held in St. John’s NL, a perennial favorite with ball players. This
year, the one team present that seemed interested in going to Prince George
was the Jarvis Merchants. Also expected to go are the defending champions
from St. Thomas Ontario, the Centennial Evergreens. Lack of interest in the
Canadians may result in a similar lack of interest in the provincial
eliminations – which have not been announced as yet. (August 4-7 but
location TBA).

Several of those in attendance, including players and umpires, noted that
the quality of the ball this year in Orlando at the AAU tournament was
great, and the weather could not have been better. A couple of the ball
players are hoping to go to Hawaii in February for the Bob Rapp Memorial
Tournament.

The excitement is also building towards the 2006 ISC World Tournament being
held in Kitchener starting August 11. We can expect that all ISC level
teams in the Travel League will be doing their best to qualify for the
world tournament being held in their own back yard.

Watch for a lot of ball action in 2006 out of Ontario.
