Walsh looking for consistency during Trans Tasman series
Monday January 30th 2006

Consistency in performance will be the key to success for the New Zealand
teams during the Trans Tasman series at Resthills Park, Hamilton next weekend.

New Zealand Community Trust White Sox coach Mike Walsh says a downfall for
the White Sox in the past has been a lack of consistency as they have put
together a strong performance and then backed it up with an average one.

Walsh believes a lot of the work towards consistent performance comes back
to the mental side of the game which is something the White Sox management
have been working on with the extended White Sox training squad in recent
camps.

There will be two New Zealand selection teams competing against Olympic
silver medalists Australia and top Australian state side New South Wales
over the four days of the tournament. All teams will play each other twice
starting on Friday February 3rd in a double round robin before the top two
sides play off for the title on Monday February 6th while the other two
sides play for the minor placings.

"The Trans Tasman series will give our players an opportunity against class
opposition to show what they can do and see how far they have come. I am
looking to see some good softball with our players playing to the standards
required at this level," said Walsh.

With two New Zealand teams taking part the series is something of a
selection trial with the world champs in August in mind. The two sides were
selected trying to achieve an even spread of talent making the games
between the two Kiwi sides a true trial.

Looking at the two Kiwi teams Walsh says there is a number of young new
faces selected along with a group of former internationals who are coming
back into the game.

The series will be something of a recall to international softball for the
likes of Tessa Wallace-Hoskin, Shirley Povey, Angela Hammond and Wendy
Telfer who have all been out of international softball in recent seasons.

While some are getting back into international softball for players such as
Junior White Sox squad members Courtenay Maihi, Ashleigh Harmer, Melanie
Gettins, Brooke Cutting, Okawa Priest, Courtenay O'Donnell, Carmelle
Sorensen and Katrina Stockford the series will be their first taste of
international softball.

"The New Zealand teams will be going out to win every game and it would be
great if both or at least one New Zealand team was in the final."
