Black too strong for Red in Trans Tasman Series
Friday February 3rd 2006

The first clash of the two New Zealand Selection teams in the Trans Tasman
Series at Resthills Park, Hamilton today has seen the Black team defeat the
Red side 5-3.

The series is something of a trial for the New Zealand players as New
Zealand Community Trust White Sox coach Mike Walsh looks ahead to the world
championships in August.

Stand out performers in the clash of the two Kiwi sides today were
outfielder Ngamoko Hiku and pitcher Michelle Kingi both from the New
Zealand Black team.

With the bat Hiku picked up two hits from three at bats and scored on both
occasions. In the field Hiku also made an impact picking up a good out in
the seventh inning with a nice play at first base.

On the mound for the Black team Kingi was in dominant form she faced 27
batters giving up just two hits while taking nine strikeouts and three
walks. Kingi didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning and proved hard to
get hold of for the Red team.

The clash between the two New Zealand teams was a tight affair and only
came to life in the fourth inning when Fiona Timu, Ngamoko Hiku and Api
Stone O’Kane all scored via a combination of hits, fielding errors and good
running.

Behind on the scoreboard New Zealand Red came out on attack in the sixth
inning as they created pressure and scored three runs with Upu Lote, Melisa
Upu and Sheree Cartwright all crossing home plate to level up the game.

New Zealand Black reasserted their presence on the game in the sixth inning
as they scored a further two runs with Ngamoko Hiku and pinch runner Wendy
Telfer all scoring to give their team a two run advantage that the Red team
couldn’t pull back.

On the mound for the New Zealand Red team was Sheree Cartwright who faced
17 batters giving up three hits and three walks. Cartwright was replaced on
the mound in the fourth inning by Carina Hale who faced 10 batters taking
two strikeouts and giving up one hit.

In the only other game played on the first day of the tournament saw
Australia defeat New South Wales 3-1.

Looking ahead tomorrow New Zealand Black and New Zealand Red both have two
games as they play Australia and New South Wales.

Trans Tasman Series, Resthills Park, Hamilton. Day 1 Results – Australia 3
New South Wales 1, New Zealand Black 5 New Zealand Red 3.
