New Zealand sides taste victory 
Sunday February 5th 2006

Day three of the Trans Tasman International Women’s Softball
Series atResthills Park, Hamilton has proved a profitable one
for the two NewZealand teams as they look for a place in the
series final.

The four team series sees the two New Zealand selection sides
taking onAustralia and New South Wales contesting a double round
robin ahead ofthe playoffs tomorrow afternoon.

In games today both New Zealand Red and New Zealand Black picked
up winsand have two victories in the series.

In the first game today New Zealand Red defeated New Zealand
Black 2-0.The decisive blow for the Red team came in the fourth
inning when AngelaHammond scored on a fielding error followed
by Kalala Gabriel who camehome on a hit by Carmelle Sorensen.


With a two run buffer the pitcher for New Zealand Red was giving
up nochances Sheree Cartwright faced 26 batters giving up just
two hits andone walk while taking 11 strikeouts. 

On the back of loss to the Red team New Zealand Black then came
out andturned things around in the afternoon with a 2-0 victory
over New SouthWales. Pitcher Michelle Kingi was the star performer
for the Kiwi team asshe was strong with the bat and on the mound.


With the ball in hand Kingi faced 26 batters giving up just three
hitsand four walks while taking seven strikeouts. On the other
side of thefence and with the bat in hand Kingi also proved hard
too stop when inthe fourth inning she smashed the ball to left
outfield for a stand updouble that scored Fiona Timu from second
base.

New Zealand Black’s other run in the game came in the third inning
whenTianna Areaiiti got on base via a fielders choice then advanced
to thirdon a hit by Upu Lote and then scored on a fielding error
by New SouthWales.  

“We knew this morning’s game was critical with who ever won that
gamehaving a better chance of going through to the final and
the Red teamplayed extremely well. The game against New South
Wales was about pridein performance and self belief in each other
and we came through with anoutstanding performance from Michelle
Kingi,” said New Zealand Blackcoach Mike Walsh.

Olympic silver medallists Australia are the only unbeaten team
in theseries with five wins while New South Wales sit at the
bottom of thepoints table with just one victory.

There are still two games in the round robin to be played tomorrow
andthey will prove to be crucial in deciding who will take on
Australia inthe final at 3pm.
