Rain halts play at men’s national club champs
Thursday March 23rd 2006

Persistent rain has hampered progress on day two of the New Zealand
Community Trust Men’s National Club Championships at Akina Park,
Hastings today.

The bad weather has resulted in three rounds of games having
to be abandoned and a revamp of the round robin section of the
draw to be finished off tomorrow ahead of the start of the playoffs.

When the weather cleared there was a chance for some action on
the diamond with defending champs Mt Albert Ramblers showing
impressive form as they defeated Poneke Kilbirnie 8-1 and Hutt
Valley Dodgers 11-2. On the back of today’s results Ramblers
lead section A along with Parklands Christchurch United who are
also unbeaten.

Ramblers showed strong hitting form on day two with NZCT Black
Sox infielder Travis Wilson and Michael Gibbs leading the way
with home runs against Poneke Kilbirnie.

In section B the home side Tamatea have been the surprise package
and are unbeaten after two days. Today they defeated Papanui
Tigers 2-1 and Hutt Valley Cardinals 2-0 add to those results
the win they picked up on the first night over Miramar and they
look certain to qualify number one in section B.

It was two close wins for Tamatea today with the two runs in
their victory over Hutt Valley Cardinals coming via fielding
errors. While the runs are coming in former NZCT Black Sox pitcher
Paul Algar is showing his class on the mound for the home side
in restricting the scoring for the opposition.

In section C Hutt City United are the only unbeaten side and
continued that form today with wins over Auckland United 4-1
and the previously unbeaten Rotorua Marist Magic 2-0.

Northcote hold the perfect record in section D with the crucial
win today coming over Giants 6-3. Going into the game both sides
were unbeaten but Northcote were too strong with power hitting
proving the difference. Both sides picked up six hits in the
game the difference being all Giants hits were singles while
Northcote’s included three home runs to Orlando Rodriguez, Brad
Rona and Dean Wallace.

In a revised draw the final round robin games will be held tomorrow
morning before the first playoff games start at 3pm.
