Hutt City United make history at men’s national club championships
Sunday March 26th 2006 - 7:45pm

It has been over 50 years in the making but Hutt City United
can now callthemselves national club champions after a victory
today in the final ofthe New Zealand Community Trust Men’s National
ClubChampionships.

Hutt City United won the final today at Akina Park, Hastings
7-2 overParklands Christchurch United.

Manager of the winning team Brent Dalton says the win is a momentous
onefor all of the players in his team with some in the twilight
of theircareer and all claiming their first national club title.

Hutt City United went through the five day tournament unbeaten
and werenever really tested in the final as they took control
in the first inningand never relinquished it.

Chris Telfer scored for Hutt City United in the first inning
then theteam added two more in the second inning two in the fourth
and one eachin the fifth and sixth inning.

Parklands Christchurch United tried to get back into the game
in thefourth inning when Daniel Milne scored and then Milne added
another runin the sixth with a home run but it was all they could
manage.

Dalton says a lot of credit for the success of the team goes
to NZCTBlack Sox pitcher Jeremy Manley. The hurler was in dominant
form throughout the tournament and that was recognised with the
presentation ofindividual tournament awards with Manley picking
up the award for toppitcher and tournament MVP.

“The awards Jeremy picked up were a reflection of his dominance
on themound. In the final after we scored a few runs early we
knew Jeremywouldn’t give up more than one or two runs,” said
Dalton.

In the final Manley faced 27 batters giving up five hits while
taking sixstrikeouts. For Parklands Christchurch United Michael
Gaiger was on themound he faced 31 batters giving up five hits
and three walks whiletaking two strikeouts.

Looking back at the final victory Dalton believes his side’s
consistencyat the tournament was the key. They were the only
side to go through thetournament unbeaten with Dalton believing
the key results came in roundrobin play when they defeated Porirua
to knock them out of titlecontention.

In the past Dalton says Hutt City United have often been know
as a teamthat can make a semi final but can rarely carry through
and win atournament. Dalton says key moments in the season came
back in Januarywhen Hutt City United won the Vic Guth Memorial
tournament with Daltonbelieving that win gave the side the confidence
to know they can win atournament.

Dalton says another key moment during the season came just a
few weeksago when Hutt City United lost both the Hutt Valley
and Intercity finalson the same day Dalton says those results
made the team understand thatthey couldn’t just walk onto a diamond
and expect to win.
