   Hutt City’s comprehensive win at the club nationals is morethan
a new name on the trophy.
   It is a triumph for all the club stalwarts over the years
inone of the less-fashionable clubs of the Hutt Valley, making
it a workingclass group if there ever was one in New Zealand
softball.
   Beating reigning champion Mt Albert Ramblers on the way madeit
so much more credible and creditable. For a team to shut-out
a battingmachine like Ramblers is more than a pitching feat but
a mental andphysical application.
   Well done HCU, making it a season which could have beentotally
memorable for the club, if not for the slips in the local clubfinals.
   But no-one who was at the Dean Schick series at NorthHarbour
in January will forget the gritty, no-nonsense, fighting stylethe
team showed for its first win there in 15 years of dogged play.Always
the side to beat, but never featured, Hutt is now a worthy holderof
the title.
   Great to see a new face at the top, and such an inspirationto
those who are in clubs, like Otahuhu, Glenora, Waitakere Bears
andHowick, to mention just a few in Auckland which are aiming
for thetop.
   So, Roy and Brent, and the late Doreen, and all the othersof
the many, many years, well done for a dream come true. You have
addedanother piece of history to New Zealand softball and another
name to anillustrious list.
   And it seems that Jeremy will be one who can help retain theworld
title. Perhaps there will be some more HCU names in thelist.
