Tribe Opens Season Well

The Wyevale Tribe opened up their season by traveling to Woodstock
this past weekend. Although they did not make it to into the
semi-finals on Monday, they sported a 2-2 record and made some
great strides early in the season.

In Game #1 the Tribe upended Harwood Corners 1-0 in great pitching
battle. The Tribe’s Jason Giffen tossed a no hitter, and allowed
only the first batter of the game to reach base via a walk.
Rob Oliver tossed great game also giving up just a few hits and
the lone run.

Game #2 had the Tribe comeback from a 3-1 deficit in the bottom
of the 6th and scored 4 runs in the inning, to take the game
5-3, and set up a match up with the Hammer for first place in
the division.

Game #3 had first place on the line as the Hammer faced the Tribe.
The Tribe gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning,
fueled by a throwing error from the outfield. The Tribe battled
back to tie the score in the top of the 6th, but in the bottom
of the 7th with 2 out and the bases loaded the Hammer came threw
with the game winning hit to take the game 3-2.

Game #4 saw the Tribe play the eventual tournament winners the
Belmont Black Sox. After 2 innings with the score 6-2, Giffen
relieved starter Kelly, and shut the Sox down the rest of the
way. The Tribe could only muster 2 more runs and stranded the
tying run at second base in the 7th.

Overall the Tribe played well. Giffen pitched extremely well
for the start of the season, but will need some help in Innerkip.
Giffen pitched a total of 19 innings gave up just 2 earned runs
and struck out 34 along the way. The Tribe will now try to clean
up their game over the next 3 weeks and head into Innerkip with
some confidence and momentum.

Thank you to Woodstock Kelsey’s for putting on a well run tournament
despite the inclement weather conditions.
