Australia Comes out Swinging on Day 1 of the Canada Cup

The Australian Open Women’s team got off to a great start in
the first day of play in the 2006 Canada Cup, defeating the Schutt
Hurricanes 9-0 and Venezuela 7-4.

Australia’s Stacey Porter led the way with the bat scoring
a two run home run with a long bomb over the centre field fence.


Kylie Kronk and Belinda Wright where great in defence taking
great catches in the outfield.

Venezuela’s Mairet Perez homered in the top of the fourth to
take a 3-2 lead over Australia. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Australia scored four runs from Sandra
Allen, Stacey Porter, Tracey Mosley and Marissa Carpadios taking
back the lead. 

Tanya Harding held the Venezuela’s bats in the last seeing
Australia winning by three runs. 

In the previous game against Schutt Hurricanes, Stacey Porter
was again powerful, by scoring existing error in the bottom of
the first. 

Danielle Stewart homered in the bottom of the second seeing Kate
Quigley home and taking Australia to a 3-0 lead. 

Excellent pitching from Kelly Gentle and a tight defense held
the Schutt Hurricanes bats. 

Australia proving too strong, taking out the game by nine runs.

Scorers were Stacey Porter, Danielle Stewart 2, Kate Quigley,
Natalie Titcume, Tracey Mosley, Danica Howlett and Sandra Allen
1. 

Australia plays Washington Blast at 6.00am (AEST) on Day 2 of
competition.
