Canada defeats Chinese Taipei and earns a berth in the playoffs
at Canada Cup

(Surrey, BC) - With an early afternoon win against Triple Crown
Colorado, the Senior Women's National Team were faced with a
must win situation against the Chinese Taipei to earn a berth
in the playoff round.

An opening inning miraculous catch from Alison Bradley (Pinkerton,
ON) in deep right field, who then converted the double play,
set the tone in arguably the most exciting ball game thus far
at the Canada Cup.

Defence seemed to be predominant in the first inning of play
until Bradley slugged a lead off solo homerun over left field
to give Canada a 1 run lead. Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) helped
Canada to a 2-0 lead driving in Rachel Schill (Kitchener, ON)
early in the third inning.

"This was a huge character win for us" stated Bradley. "It was
a great team effort, everyone contributed. Lawried continued
to be great for us on the mound and Holtz kept us alive giving
us the chances we needed to win the game."

Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) received the start for Canada in
the circle and threw a solid game holding the Chinese Taipei
scoreless through 5 complete innings. Despite Canada's hitting
streak, their luck seemed to have run short as Lawrick was robbed
of a homerun that resulted in a double play for the Chinese Taipei.

The Chinese Taipei rallied off of the catch made by their center
fielder and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to
take a 1 run lead. Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) came in
to relieve Lawrie in an attempt to regain control of the ball
game.

The Canadians bounced back immediately in the bottom of the sixth
on a huge Angela Lichty (Guelph, ON) solo homerun over left field.
With newfound life, the Canadians held on to force extra innings.

After trading runs in the eighth inning, Canada held the Chinese
Taipei scoreless in the ninth off of a great recovery from Lichty
stopping the run from scoring at home. Feeding from this energy,
Canada exploded in the bottom of the ninth combining for 3 straight
singles including Kristy Odamura's (Richmond, BC) game ending
1 run single.

"This win reinforced the characteristics and dynamics of this
ball club" stated Lori Sippel, Head Coach of the Senior Women's
National Team Program. "Regardless of the situation they keep
moving forward. The never quit and they keep battling right
until the very end. Every game so far has helped us learn something
new about the team and the one thing we know for sure is that
the team might bend, however they won't break."

After winning a game that featured everything from diving catches
to homeruns to great double plays, Canada (2nd) earned a berth
in the Canada Cup quarter finals on Friday July 7th at 3:30pm
versus Venezuela (3rd) on diamond 1. For complete statistical
