Day 1 of Canada Cup Playoff Action Tough On Canadians

(Surrey, BC) - After fighting off elimination from the Canada
Cup, the Senior Women's National Team fell to Venezuela by a
score of 8-7 in round 1 of Canada Cup playoff action.

Canada roared to an early 3 run lead in the first inning on a
Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) 2 run double scoring Kristy Odamura
(Richmond, BC) and Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC). Cindy Eadie
followed with a one run single scoring Lawrick to give Canada
a 3-0 lead.

Venezuela answered immediately in the bottom of the inning scoring
2 runs and cutting Canada's lead to only 1 run. Un-phased by
Venezuela's attack, the Canada offense exploded in the second
inning off of another one run Larwick double scoring Odamura.
Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) and Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon,
SK) each drove in a run to elevate Canada to a 6-2 lead.

Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) who was shaky for Canada versus
the Netherlands as she gave up 6 runs in the first inning received
the start in the circle for Canada. Despite giving up 2 early
runs, Mackin seemed in control of the ball game until Venezuela
strung together 6 hits and 6 runs in the 5th to take a 2 run
lead in the ball game. Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) came
to Mackin's relief and closed out the inning.

It was all too familiar for Canada who seen an early game lead
disappear in the late stages of the ball game. With Holtz holding
Venezuela scoreless after the 5th inning, Canada pressured for
the lead hoever fell short of mounting a comeback stranding 14
runners on base throughout the game.

With the loss Canada will need to win all remaining games in
order to play in the Championship game. Canada will face Florida
Quicksilver at 10:30 am on Saturday July 8th at Softball City
on diamond number 1. For complete statistical information, please

In other Canada Cup Action - Errors costly as Canada Elite was
shut out by the Netherlands in playoff action.

The Netherlands drew first blood in the second inning taking
advantage of 3 Canada Elite errors to take a 2-0 lead. Canada
pressured in the bottom of the third inning however had their
run fall short as pinch runner Megan Stastook (Calgary, AB) was
caught steeling at third. On the same play, Shannon Rossiter
(Surrey, BC) was caught steeling at second ending putting an
end to Canada Elite's chances.

The Netherlands pitching and defense continued to frustrate Canada
Elite offence holding the Canadians to only 2 hits in the ball
game. Ashley Lanz (Winnipeg, MB) was credited for the loss allowing
2 runs on 5 hits in five and one thirds innings of work.

Canada Elite will face China in sudden death elimination as they
look to keep their playoff drive alive. The game will take place
at July 8th at 8:00 am at Softball City on diamond 1. For complete
