Australia has first win at US World Cup

 

The Australian Open Women’s softball team, AussieSpirit, has
defeated China 3-1 intheir first game at the US World Cup in
Oklahoma.

 

In the 35 degree heat, China got away toa 1-0 lead in the bottom
of the second, with Australia quick toreply in the top of the
third when Amanda Doman was walkedhome. 

 

In the top of the sixth, co-captainNatalie Ward injured herfoot
and was replaced on base by Danielle Stewart with Kate Quigley
scoring. Danica Howlett came off the bench and got a pinchhit
up the middle to allow Danielle Stewart to scoreand take Australia
to a 3-1lead. 

 

Australia’s pitcherKelly Hardie managed togrind her way through
the first few innings, keeping China to one run,and was replaced
by Tanya Harding, in her 250thgame, in the top of the fourth
who complimented Hardie’s work holding thebats. 

 

Australia’snext game is at 10.00am (AEST)tomorrow when they take
on Great Britain. 

  

The five day event features the USA, Australia, Japan, China,
Canada and Great Britain.
