Japan Defeats Canada 2-1 in Opening Day 

 

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Japandefending World Cup champions, came
out strong in their opening game in Oklahoma City to defeat Canada,
2-1 on the first day ofcompetition. Despite being held to only
four hits, Japan was able to collect the winwith the help of
a wild pitch that allowed the winning run to score in thefifth
inning. 

 

Japanace Yukiko Ueno started in the circle and was perfect in
the three innings sheworked before being relieved by Mariko Masubuchi.
Canada put up its first hit of thegame in the fourth when Sheena
Lawrick singled to left field but was leftstranded. Japanposted
its first run of the game in the fourth when Eri Yamada scored
off asingle by Satoko Mabuchi. 

 

In the fifth inning, Japanchased Canadastarter Danielle Lawrie
from the circle with two runners in scoring positionbut the move
did not pay off as reliever Robin Mackin delivered a wild pitchthat
allowed the winning run to score. Looking for some late inning
magic, Canadacame out in the sixth and cut the lead in half after
Melanie Matthews led offwith a double to right center and scored
on a single by Alison Bradley. But therally would fall short
as the next two batters lined out to end the inning.

 

Danielle Lawrie took the loss for Canadaallowing four hits and
two earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched, while MarikoMasubuchi
earned the win in relief and Juri Takayama picked up a save for
Japan.

 

Canada(0-1) will take on the United States(1-0) tomorrow at 6:30
p.m. (CT) while Japan(1-0) takes on China(0-1) at 8:00 p.m. (CT).

Australia opens World Cup with 3-1 win over China

 

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Despite matching Australiain the hits
column, Chinawas unable to match them in the runs column and
dropped their opening game 3-1at II World Cup of Softball presented
byKellogg’s Frosted Flakes. Both teams put up six hits, twoerrors
and four strikeouts but Chinaleft seven runners on base and that
was the deciding factor in the Australianvictory. 

 

Chinatook an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when
Sun Li singled tocenterfield to score Zhang Ai. Australiatied
the game in the top of the third thanks to a bases loaded walk
by pitcherYu Yanhong that scored Amanda Doman who led off the
inning with a single tocenterfield.   

 

Australiabroke the tie in the top of the sixth inning thanks
to a walk, wild pitch anderror that resulted in the game winning
run.  Tracy Mosley led off theinning with a walk and was relieved
by pinch runner Kate Quigley. A wild pitchand an errant throw
to first base resulted in Quigley scoring to give Australiathe
lead. Pinch hitter Danica Howlett singled to centerfield to drive
in thefinal run of the game.  

 

Pitcher Tanya Harding of Australia earned the win in reliefafter
allowing only one hit in four innings of work. Yu Huili suffered
the lossafter allowing three runs on five hits.

   

Australia(1-0) will take on Great Britain(0-1) tomorrow at 7:00
p.m. while Chinameets Japanat 8:00 p.m. Complete coverage including
