AUSTRALIA IMPROVES TO 2-0 IN WORLD CUP OF SOFTBALL

 

OKLAHOMA CITY – Australia remains unbeaten with a 12-0 fiveinning
shutout over winless Great Britainin the second day of the II
World Cup of Softball presented by Kellogg’sFrosted Flakes at
the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.The loss
was the second for Great Britain as they have lost both of theirgames
in their first appearance in the international event.   

 

Australia, which cameto Oklahoma City after winning the Canada
Cup,collected 10 hits off two Great Britain pitchers. Heather
Brown started for Great Britainand yielded nine runs and six
hits in an inning and two-thirds. TiffanyMcDonald came in during
the second inning and finished the game, allowing fourhits and
three runs.

 

One of the hits McDonald allowed was a solo home run overthe
right field fence in the third inning by Australiacatcher Danica
Howlett (Sydney New South Wales). Howlett alsohad two-run single
in an Aussie six-run second inning and finished the gamewith
four RBIs. 

 

Winning pitcher right-hander Kelly Gentle (Blacktown, New South
Wales) hurled the first four innings andallowed only one hit—a
single to left field by Terra Davenport in thesecond inning.
Gentle fanned four batters and walked one. Catherine Bishop (Adelaide,
South Australiahurled the last inning for Australiaand set Great
Britaindown in order, striking out one batter. 

 

Australia (2-0) advancesto face the United States(2-0) Saturday
at 11 a.m. with Japanfacing Great (0-2) Britainat 1:00 p.m. Australia
and Japanwill then meet for a 9:00 p.m. match up.

 

 

 

JAPAN DEFEATS CHINAIN NINE INNINGS WITH HOMERUN

 

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. –  A two-run home run inthe top of the ninth
kept the defending World Cup Champions, Japan, undefeatedat the
II World Cup of Softball presented by Frosted Flakes with a 6-4
win overChina.   

 

The lead off batter of the game set the pace for the team asJapan’sRei
Nishiyama doubled to left field and scored on a double by Eri
Yamada. 

 

China answeredback in the bottom of the first when Zhou Yi singled
to left field and scoredoff a triple by Li Chunxia. Chinaplated
two more runs after a double by Zhang Ai scored two runs. Ai
later scoredafter two consecutive illegal pitches by Japan starter
Yuko Endo advancedher home. 

 

Japan cut thelead to 4-2 in the second and tied the game in the
third when Mikiko Tanaka ledoff with a single to centerfield
scored on a triple from Mishini. The final runof the inning came
off a single by Satoko Mabuchi. 

 

The teams remained scoreless through the final four inningsand
headed into international tie-breaker at the top of the eighth
inning.Neither team could push the runner across the plate until
the ninth when EmiNaito belted a two run homerun to secure the
league.
