Aussies reach bronze medal match
The Australian Open Womens softball team has made itthrough
to the bronze medal match at the 2006 US World Cup in Oklahoma.
The five day tournament has seen Australia finish equalthird
with Canada with a two win-threeloss ratio. The USA has wonfive
from five, finishing in first place, followed by Japan with oneloss.
Australia finishedwith a further two losses, Japan 5-4 and Canada
4-1.
In this mornings game, Canada scoredthree runs in the opening
innings after Australiaspitcher Kelly Gentle walked three batters
with one scoring. With two on base, KateQuigleys fielding error
helped push Canadas leadto 3-0.
Gentle was relieved by Catherine Bishop in the bottom of thefirst
inning and gave five hits in her four innings pitched with Canada
convertinga run in the bottom of the fourth.
Australia had fivehits but was unable to convert until the top
of the fifth inning after NatalieWard scored on Sheena Lawricks
fielding error.
In yesterdays play, Japan defeated Australia 5-4 with AustraliasSandra
Allen, Stacey Porter, Belinda Wright and Danielle Stewart crossing
theplate.
Australia will meet Canada tomorrow at6.00am (AEST) withdefending
champions USA meeting Japan in the Championshipgame.
