Canada Earns a Bronze Medal at the World Cup of Softball  

 

(Ottawa, ON) - After a shaky start to the tournament, Canada
pulled together as a team to win their last four consecutive
games, including 2 wins over Australia, to earn a bronze medal
at the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, Okla.

 

In the third place game, Canada took to the early lead and never
looked back as they defeated the world number 2 ranked Australia
to take the bronze medal by a score of 2-1

 

Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) started the scoring for Canada
with a one run single driving in Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC)
who reached on a single and proceeded to steal second base. 
Pinch runner Katie Hnatyk (London, ON), followed scoring on a
throwing error by the right fielder giving Canada a 2 run lead
in the third inning.

 

Australia tried to mount a comeback in the seventh as Danielle
Stewart lead off and reached first on a Canada error and proceeded
to advance to third base.  Australia fell short of scoring Stewart
and fell to Canada for the second time of the tournament.

 

Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) picked up the win for Canada throwing
a complete game shutting out the Australians giving up only 5
hits and striking out 7 batters.

 

With a Canada Cup silver medal and a World Cup bronze medal,
the Canadian turn their attention to pre World Championship training
with a U.S. Tour including the Texas Thunder and the Connecticut
Breakettes both of the National Professional Fastpitch League.
