Selects Split
Bluewater Fastball League Doubleheader
Sunday July 23, 2006
at Duncan McLellan Park, Owen Sound
The Owen Sound Midgets Selects split their doubleheader, losing
7-0 to the
Belmore Stingers in the opener but rebounding to out score the
Chepstow Aces
8-5 in the second game
In the opening game, Belmore grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of
the second
inning.
Left fielder Terry Whiteside had a 2 out double and was cashed
on an r.b.i.
single by Brett McPherson.
Chesptow made it 2-0 in the third when shortstop Shane Smith
singled, went
to second on a wild pitch and scored on an r.b.i. from third
baseman Dennis
Wintemute.
The Selects threatened in the bottom of the 4th with runners
at second and
third, but pitcher Scott Smith quashed the rally without giving
up a run.
In the top of the 5th, Belmore exploded for 5 runs, highlighted
by a three
run homer by Wintemute.
Scott Smith got on with a walk, advanced on a two base error
and scored on a
Jay Marston r.b.i..
Shane Smith, who got on board via the error, scored on another
Selects error
to make it 4-0.
Wintemute cleared the bases with his homer that landed on the
top of the
fence in right center.
The Selects didn't score in the 5th, so Belmore posted the 7-0
mercy
victory.
Winning pitcher Scott Smith gave up just 1 hit and struck out
8 in the
shutout victory.
For the Selects, Nolan Kreis was touched for 7 hits and struck

on a
Jason Zister r.b.i.
The Midget Selects scored 3 in the bottom of the third.
Second baseman Greg Wardell opened with a walk. Brent Thompson
followed with
a sacrifice attempt but the Aces misplayed it.

Wardell

left fielder
Tyler Baumber
Third baseman Matt Murphy followed with an r.b.i. single scoring
Miller and
giving the Selects a 3-1 lead.
Chepstow regained the lead in the 5th with a 3 run inning.
Left Fielder Calvin Anstett got on with a bunt, advanced on a
ground out and
scored when pitcher Jeremy Graul singled.
Zister followed with a walk and both he and Graul scored on a
2 run double
by third baseman Greg Graul.
Chepstow padded their lead in the 6th with another run.
Catcher Chris Lang singled and Clancy knocked him with a solid
double to
make it 5-3 Chepstow.
However, the Selects had a 5 run outburst in the bootom of the
6th to get
the lead back.
With one out, Wardell walked again.
Thompson singled moving Wardell to third.
Thompson attempted to steal second, but the throw ended up in
centre field
which scored Wardell.
A well executed squeeze by Matt Kuhl scored Thompson ( eventually
) to tie
the game at 5.
The call at the plate was disputed. It appeared the initial call
on Thompson
was safe, but then was changed to an " out. "
However, after an argument and a consultation amongst the umpires,
the call
was reversed to " safe " and the game was tied.
The reversed call had a negative impact on the Aces as Tyler
Baumber, Chris
Fyvie and Murphy all drilled solid hits in succession to make
it 8-5
Selects.
Chepstow didn't score in the 7th and the Selects managed to split
their
doubleheader.
Jamie Simpson went all the way in the circle for the Selects.
He gave up 7
hits and struck out 4.
Jeremy Graul went the route for Chepstow. He gave up 10 hits,
4 in the 6th,
and struck out 3.
Defensively, Graul was wounded by 4 errors on the day while the
Midget
Selects didn't commit any errors in the ball game.
