Canada Defeats the Texas Thunder in Series Opener 6-0

(League City, TX) - Canada defeated the Texas Thunder of the
National Professional Fastpitch League 6-0 in the first of four
games scheduled at Big League Dreams Sports Complex in League
City, Texas.

Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) started the Canadian rally in the
third inning with a double that was just out of reach of Thunder
first baseman Karrie Rider. Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) then walked
to put runners on first and second with just one out. After a
strikeout to Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) for the second out
of the inning, Canada took advantage of a defensive error by
the Thunder as McLean was caught in a run down and during the
play allowing Matthews to score all the way from second base
giving Canada a one run lead.

Canada continued their attack scoring two more runs in the top
of the fifth on a two-run homerun from Lawrick. Canada rounded
out the scoring in the top of the sixth tacking on three more
runs to increase the lead to 6-0. Lawrick led the Canadian attack
finishing the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a homerun and 4
RBIs.

The offense provided by Canada was all that was needed by pitcher
Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) on Wednesday night. The hard-throwing
right hander from the University of Washington allowed just two
Thunder hits on the night and she struck out eight and retired
14 of the final 15 hitters in the game.

Texas had its best chance against the Canadian National Team
when they loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning
with just one out, however, Adrian Gregory and Denise Dahlberg
both struck out swinging to end the threat. The Thunder would
not get another runner past first base in the game.

Christa Williams (9-8) took the loss in the circle for Thunder
in the series opener allowing three of the six Team Canada runs.
Williams went the first five innings of the game and struck out
nine to increase her league-leading total to 144. Nicole Neuerburg
relieved Williams in the circle and allowed the final three runs
of the game in two innings of work.

Canada will face off against Texas Thunder in 3 more games before
moving to Connecticut to face the Breakettes to conclude their
pre ISF World Championship training. All remaining games against
the Thunder will be broadcast on live radio through the Texas
Thunder website www.thunderprofastpitch.com.
