Kitchener, Ontario - August 10, 2006 - The South Perth All-Stars
rode a seven-run fifth to an overwhelming 14-5 victory over the
Golden Horseshoe All-Stars in the first annual PROforma All-Star
Challenge Cup played at Peter Hallman Ball Yard in front of a
crowd of more than 200 fastball fans.
South Perth game MVP Jodie Schnarr, of the Bridgeport Braves,
belted a two-run home run to into the center field bleachers
and was followed by an RBI triple by winning pitcher Danny Martin,
of the Elmira Juniors, to salt the game away for the hosts in
the fateful fifth. Walks to Tavistock Merchants' Jamie Boyd and
to Bridgeport's Jay Schnarr were sandwiched around a single by
Josh Brohman of the Elmira Juniors to get the ball rolling in
the inning. A two-RBI single by Scott Kemp, who appeared to look
at strike three but was granted a reprieve, broke open the floodgates.
Tavistock's Ross Herold, who had an RBI triple in the fourth,
singled in the final run before losing pitcher Jeff Wilson was
able to stop the bleeding.
Starting on the mound for South Perth was Todd Uhrig of the Elora
Brewers and set down the GHFL in order in the first. Uhrig and
catcher Tim Dubois reached on consecutive fielder's choices in
the bottom of the first and scored on a single by Jeff Pauli
of the Mitchell Mets.
The GHFL tied it up in the top of the second as Trevor Falk and
Scott Young of the Niagara Snappers both singled and scored on
a single by Burke Thomson of the Waterdown Alexander Keith's.
Thomson was named the GHFL game MVP.
After a 1-2-3 second, GHFL starter Scott Wagar of the Niagara
Falls Fury gave up a single to Jodie Schnarr and got two quick
outs before surrendering an opposite field blast by Dubois to
put South Perth up 4-2.
In the South Perth fourth, Ron Dean walked and scored on a seeing
eye RBI single by Danny Martin. Elora's Terry Martin came around
on the triple by Herold.
Waterdown Hammer's Dave Benallick tripled to right center to
lead off the GHFL fifth and prompty was scored by Roy Scott of
the Morriston Coyotes. Scott was erased on a controversial play
at second as Terry Martin dropped the feed from Jay Schnarr but
was ruled to have lost it on the transfer.
Jeff Wilson got two back for the GHFL in the sixth, blasting
a two-run moonshot over the centerfield bleachers, clearing the
300-foot slow-pitch fence and clanging off the infield fence
on diamond three.
Jim Schnarr gave up a two-out walk to Pat Graham in the seventh,
but that was it for the GHFL.
Ken Doucet of PROforma presented the PROforma Challenge Cup to
George Nahrgang, president of the victorious South Perth team
in a post-game ceremony.
On behalf of the GHFL, I want to thank Ken Doucet, Rick Boyd
and George Nahrgang, as well as the players on both teams for
making the inaugural edition of the PROforma Ontario All-Star
Challenge a memorable event. Peter Hallman Ball Yard is in great
shape for the ISC World Tournament starting tonight and many
players on both teams will be participating in either the ISC
Worlds or the ISC II Tournament of Champions starting Sunday
at Budd Park & Kinsmen Park.
Technical gremlins prevented the game from going out live on
Ballpark Radio, but a podcast version will be available for download
shortly.
