One run enough for White Sox over Italy

A single run in the fourth inning has been enough for the New
ZealandCommunity Trust White Sox to claim their second win at
the 2006 Women’sSoftball World Championships over night with
a 1-0 victory overItaly.

The win in Beijing last night was crucial to the White Sox as
it keepsthem in realistic contention of contesting the playoffs.


In such a tight game the difference came in the fourth inning
when firstMelanie Hulme got on base with a triple before scoring
on a single byMelisa Upu. After taking the advantage on the scoreboard
New Zealand hadtight enough defence to defend the win as they
committed no errors in thefield with pitcher Ali Arnold only
giving up two hits in thegame.

New Zealand now have a two win one loss record after three days
of thechampionships and are on target to attain their first goal
of making itthrough to the playoffs. To qualify for the top eight
playoffs the WhiteSox have to finish in the top four of the pool
at the completion of roundrobin play.

After three days of the tournament New Zealand are fourth in
their poolwith tough games against the home side China (4.30pm
NZ time) anddefending champions USA over the next two days. The
crucial games for theWhite Sox will come on Friday and Saturday
when they take on GreatBritain and DPR Korea, if New Zealand
can win those last two games theywill qualify for the playoffs.

New Zealand’s game against China tomorrow will have full televisioncoverage
in China and a videocast of the game will be available on thetournaments
official websitewww.2006softball.org.

There are two unbeaten teams in New Zealand pool after three
days, USAand China. USA had a tough win on day three defeating
the previouslyunbeaten Canada 4-0 while China were too strong
for DPR Korea 2-0.

In the other pool there are also two unbeaten teams with 2006
AthensOlympic silver medallists Australia and Japan leading the
way. Australiahad a big win on day three over Chinese Taipei
7-0 in five inning whileJapan were made to work hard for a 3-2
victory over Greece.

Day 3 results:
Pool A – China 2 DPR Korea 0, USA 4 Canada 0, Great Britain 4
SouthAfrica 0, New Zealand 1 Italy 0.
Pool B – Japan 3 Greece 2, Netherlands 11 Botswana 0, Venezuela
7Colombia 0, Australia 7 Chinese Taipei 0.
