Women’s National League wide open
Thursday December 7th 2006

Just who’s name will be etched on the New Zealand Community Trust
Women’sNational League winner’s trophy for the 2006/07 season
is a wide openquestion emphasized today by the naming of protected
players for the sixfranchises.

>From the squads named today the main title contenders are likely
to beCanterbury, Hutt Valley and defending champions Auckland.

The red and black team from Canterbury could have the edge in
the form ofNZCT White Sox pitcher Ali Arnold. The national league
this season willbe the first time Arnold has taken part with
commitments to her Americancollege in the past counting her out.
While they have fire power on themound they also have experience
and hitting power from players such asLisa Kersten and Melanie
Hulme.

Hutt Valley have named a line up bursting with hitting power
with playerssuch as Sheree Cartwright, Kiri Shaw, Cindy Potae,
Upu Lote and Togi Lotedangerous with the bat. They also appear
to have a wealth of talent inthe field and how coach Naomi Shaw
manages that array of talent couldprove one of the biggest challenges.

As the defending champions Auckland can not be discounted they
have manyof last years’ team returning with the addition of pitcher
MichalTangaroa. They also have a new coach this season in Wayne
Lockton.

Wellington have named 11 players today and while they may be
full oftalent they appear on the surface to be lacking in experience
andfirepower with the bat. Pitchers Helen Packer and Lisa Such
willlead the team on the mound and how they handle that role
could bedecisive to the team’s chances.

Southern Pride and Central Vikings have named seven and eight
playersrespectively with both teams requiring two pitchers each
from the playerdraft. Selections from the draft will be key for
both franchises inregard to how competitive they will be with
the more highly fanciedsides.

The players draft will be held on Tuesday December 12th before
the firstround of games on January 20th and 21st. Round two of
the league will beplayed on February 17th and 18th before the
top four teams contest thefinals weekend on March 3rd and 4th.
