Hard hitting on day one

The first day of the 2007 Australian Fastpitch Championships
got underway at Blacktown Olympic Park today with State teams
smashing the ball out of the park.

Western Australia and Victoria opened up the competition for
the men with Victoria’s Ricky Wheeler hitting a home run in
the top of the first. In a quick reply, Western Australia’s
Adam Humble hit a massive home run bringing home three base runners
in the bottom of the first.

Mark Harris and Delpero hit home runs to help Western Australia
to a 7-2 victory.

New South Wales were comfortable winners over Northern Territory
10-0 with Travis and Joel Southam and Scott Watson scoring two
runs each.

It was a pitching dual from the first inning when ACT and Western
Australia hit the diamond with 19 strike outs in the game. Michael
Tanner opened up the scoring in the top of the sixth with ACT
winning 3-0.

It was the battle of bats on the main diamond with New South
Wales and Queensland slogging five home runs with Queensland
taking the glory 12-6.

Victoria were too strong for Northern Territory winning with
the run a head rule in the bottom of the fifth innings 12-0.

ACT are currently taking on Queensland to conclude the first
day’s play for the men’s competition which has so far seen
18 home runs scored.

In the women’s competition, it was a tight game between ACT
and South Australia, with ACT winning 2-0.

Queensland dominated ACT scoring four runs in the bottom of the
third and another in the six to beat ACT 5-0.

Victoria were convincing winners over Western Australia. Leah
Quackenbush scored Western Australia’s only run in the top
of the first with a quick reply from Victoria, finishing the
game in just five innings 8-1.

The games between Queensland and New South Wales and Victoria
and Tasmania are currently underway with three more games to
be played to conclude the day’s play for the women.

Tomorrow promises to be just as hard hitting with a full day
of play starting from 10am (AEST).
