Southland reign supreme at women’s NPC
Thursday January 11th 2007

One run has been enough for Southland to claim the New Zealand
CommunityTrust Women’s National Provincial Cup title at Hataitai
Park, Wellingtonthis afternoon.

Southland has claimed the title with a 1-0 victory in the final
overNorth Harbour repeating the success they had at the tournament
in 2005.

Southland scored the winning run in the top of the third inning
withyoung catcher Carmelle Sorenson crossed home plate on the
back of acouple of fumbled catches in the North Harbour outfield.

Victorious coach Russell Frisby says the final was something
of a repeatof the old days when softball where games were won
by the slightest ofmargins.

“North Harbour made a couple of errors and we took advantage
of that. Wefielded really well and I think it was a good game
of softball like theold days,” said Frisby.

In such a tight game Frisby believes the difference between the
two teamswas the fielding with tight pitching from both sides
providing fewopportunities in the game.

On the mound for Southland was Ali Arnold who faced 23 batters
and gaveup just three hits while taking nine strikeouts. Michal
Tangaroa was justas dominant for North Harbour she faced 29 batters
giving up four hitsand claiming seven strikeouts.

Throughout the tournament Southland and North Harbour and been
the formteams with each side only suffering one loss in round
robin play. In whatcould have been a sign for the final when
the two teams met in roundrobin play that was a close match as
well with Southland scoring two runsin the final innings to win
the game on that occasion.

Defeated North Harbour coach Jackie Smith was proud of her team
after thefinal but was also well aware that a couple of lapses
in the field costthem the game.

“Once you get down to pressure games likes finals you can’t make
fieldingerrors,” said Smith.
