Victoria upsets Queensland on day five

 

Victoria has caused an upset in the women'scompetition on day
five of the 2007 Australian Open Fastpitch Championshipsdefeating
competition leaders Queensland, 2-0. 

Queensland, who were undefeated winning nine straight games,
went down toVictoria after not being able to answer the pitching
of 37 year old RaeleneJeffrey, with Queensland getting seven
hits for the game. 

Victoria is in second place on the points table winning ninefrom
11 games. Queensland remains in first place.

Victoria will meet Queensland in themajor semi final tomorrow
at 4pm with the winner advancingto the grand final to be played
on Saturday. 

Former Australian player Brooke Wilkins pitched exceptionally
well for ACT withseven strike outs and allowing New South Wales
just three hits to win 4-1. 


New South Wales, Western Australia and ACT arelocked in a three
way battle for the remaining two finals positions with fivewins
each.  

 

In the men’s competition, ACT is still on top undefeatedafter
a 6-0 win over Northern Territory with acombined pitching effort
from Adam Folkard and Jeff Goolagong pitching 14strike outs.


They will meet Western Australia in the major semifinal tomorrow
after Western Australia defeated Northern Territory 7-0 to secure
second place. 

 

Hamish Monkman hit three home runs to help Queensland score theirthird
win of the championship defeating New South Wales 13-3 andsecure
their place in the finals where they will play Victoria. 



Victoria are scheduled to take on ACT at 5.30pm and New South
Wales at 8.00pm (AEST) to concludetoday’s play.
