Perth set to host Under 19 Women’s Championship  

 

The heat is about to gear up on the Under 19 Women’scompetition
as players try to make a mark on selectors for the InternationalSoftball
Federation’s Women’s World Championship set to take placelater
this year. 



With seven teams (ACT, NSW, Qld, SA, Tas, Vic and WA) allset
to take to the field for the Australian Under 19 Women’s FastpitchChampionship,
Elinor McKenzie Shield, at Mirrabooka, WA from Sunday 21-27January
2007. 

 

The Championship will be officially opened by the WesternAustralian
Minister for Sport and Recreation, The Hon. John Kobelke at 5.45pm
on 21January. 

South Australia won the prestigious Shield lastyear after a 22
year drought defeating Victoria 4-2.

 

This year the competition will be fierce as selectors keep aclose
eye on players vying for a spot in the Australian Under 19 Women’steam.
New South Wales has dominated the championshipsover the last
decade winning the Shield seven times.

 

The championship is a double round robin over five days,with
the top four qualifying teams playing off in the finals series,
with fifthand sixth a positional match. The grand final will
be played on Saturday 27January.

 

The Elinor McKenzie Shield has proven to be an indicator offuture
talent, with current Australian players such as Natalie Ward
(MostValuable Player 1993) and Stacey Porter (Pitching Award,
1999, Most ValuablePlayer, 2000 & 2001) demonstrating their potential
to be future AustralianOpen Women’s Players. 


The Elinor McKenzie Shield will be hosted by the Western Australian
SoftballAssociation and will be played at the State Softball
Headquarters inMirrabooka.
