Heatwave win National Leauge

The QAS Heatwave has defeated the NSWIS Firestars in a close
game at the National Women’s League at Blacktown Olympic Park
to win the Audrey McLaughlin Cup.

Jodie Bowering proved why she gained a spot in the national team
by smashing the ball over the centre field fence for a home run
to get the Heatwave off to an early lead.

Nicole Bennett hit a triple with her bat and a hard drive to
left field from Kylie Cronk scored Bennett which increased the
Queenslanders lead to 2-0.

The Firestars hit back in the top of the fourth to close the
gap to one after Belinda Wright scored with the help of her team
mates.

Zara Mee was relieved on the pitching mound by Tatiana Holodnow
in the bottom of the fourth innings for the Firestars. Tracey
Mosley responded by hitting a home run to score the Heatwave’s
third and final run.

Being in the shadows of some of Queensland’s and Australia’s
best pitchers over the last decade of Olympians Tanya Harding,
Kelly Hardie and Brooke Wilkins, Jocelyn McCallum got her chance
to shine for the Heatwave.

McCallum didn’t let her team mates down winning the game and
the overall pitching award for the National League, facing 114
batters, 33 strike outs with and earned run average of 0.183.

Her team mate and Heatwave captain, Sandra Allen dominated the
competition over the four months winning the batting and MVP
awards.

QAS Heatwave also took out the Blacktown Cup with pitcher, Sandra
Avery winning the pitching award facing 65 batters and not giving
up any walks or runs.

In other awards, Brenda De Blaes, Belgian international with
the Diamonds, was outstanding with her bat, winning the batting
award with an average .636.

The MVP went to Belinda Wright from the Firestars who also dominated
the competition with the bat.

The VIS Titans finished in third place after going down to the
Firestars 9-6 in the preliminary final and the Diamonds defeated
the WAIS Coastals 8-0 with the help of three-time Olympian Melanie
Roche who pitched a shut out.
