Canada edges Argentina at Junior Womenâs World Championships
(Enschede, Netherlands) - After an emotional extra innings loss
to the United States yesterday, the Canadian National Womenâs
Junior Team came up with a flat performance against a fired up
Argentina squad but managed to come away with a 2-1 win. The
win gives Canada a 3-1 record and they play Puerto Rico (3-1)
and Australia (3-1) over the next two days.
Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) fired a two hitter with five strike
outs and no walks to lead Canada as she only surrendered an unearned
run in the fifth.
Canada opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when
Corrine Doornberg (Langley, BC) beat out an infield hit, stole
second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Doornberg
scored on a single by Richelle McGarva (Cloverdale, BC) to shallow
right field.
In the top of the fifth, Argentina took advantage of three Canadian
errors to tie the game on a fielderâs choice. Jenna Caira was
able to induce a two out ground ball back to the mound with two
runners on base to hold Argentina to only one run in the inning.
Canada responded in the bottom of the inning when Emily Densem
(Toronto, ON) led off with a triple down the right field line
and later scored on an RBI ground out by Katrina Lavadan (Scarborough,
ON), giving Canada a 2-1 lead.
Canada shut down Argentina the rest of the way as Caira retired
six straight batters to end the game.
âWe didnât play as well as we could have today, but it was
good enough to beat themâ said Lavadan after the game. âWe
need to keep the intensity up the entire game and play at our
level.â
Canada plays Puerto Rico (3-1) tomorrow at 10:00am (ET). The
game can be seen live through webcam feeds through the Softball
