Team Canada slams past Japan Denso club team in Canada Cup action

(White Rock, BC) - After spoiling a couple of chances to put
runs up on the board in the top of the first inning, Canada gave
up three in the bottom half of the inning. From that point on
though, the Canadians would not look back scoring a total of
11 runs on 15 hits. Denso put three runs on the scoreboard in
the bottom of the first inning, but as winning pitcher Katie
Rosentreter (Winnipeg, MB) settled into the game the Denso team
could only push across one more run in the bottom of the fifth
inning to extend the game into the sixth. The final score was
11-4.

Canada opened the scoring early in the game, but was only able
to bring in one run on four hits. Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB)
delivered an RBI double to bring the first run in. After scoring
another run on an RBI single by Kristy Odamura (Richmond, BC)
in the top of the second inning, Canada exploded for six more
runs in the third inning, capped off by a pinch-hit grand slam
to deep center field off the bat of Ashley Van Boxmeer (Orange,
California).

The Canadians added two more runs in the fourth after a triple
by Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) and an RBI groundout by Tamra Howren
(White Rock, BC), and scored their 11th run of the game in the
sixth inning to secure their third straight run rule shortened
game.

It was another balanced offensive game by the red and white with
Tamra Howren, Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK), Sheena Lawrick
and Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) each contributing multiple
hits in the game.

“It was great to have the come from behind win”, states Head
Coach Lori Sippel. “That situation offers the team the opportunity
to really see what is inside. Good at bats from the bench sparked
us and Katie made good on her second opportunity.”

Team Canada will turn its attention to Georgia Wilson Select,
who will be their opponent in Canada Cup action on Tuesday night.
Game time is 6:30pm at Softball City in Surrey/White Rock, BC.
